First, I hope that a President Obama has the political agility, good sense and balls to stand up to his own party.

On John McCain, I am not so sure that he has personally changed that much in the last however many years. I think we just know a whole lot more about the man having been exposed to him- and his counterpart- ad infinitum recently.
Unfortunately for he and more mainstream Republicans, when your "side" is in such desparate straits the extreme elements feel more emboldened. Less constrained to say to hold back and say just what they want. It is indeed sad that he must defend his opponent as a decent American. Of course (at least to me), this could easily be Obama needing to say the same about McCain under different circumstances.


I personally have fears that were Obama to lose in November-particularly given a Florida '00 type scenario- things could get really ugly, riots in some areas, etc. Certainly, Barack Obama would be out there trying to calm things down. I guess what this has to do with John McCain and his recent town hall meetings is that he did the honorable thing, but no less than should be expected of a decent and patriotic American would or should do.

I don't think this will be a problem. He will have a ton of political capital if he wins. I guess there's a small risk, since he was a junior senator at the time. Obama's celebrity status, which is one of the most irksome things about him to Republicans, should actually help him stand up to his party.

Independence is generally a good thing, but what exactly did you have in mind that he should stand up to the party on?

This reads exactly like all the theories that Shakespeare couldn't have written Shakespeare's plays--of course a commoner couldn't have written them, but only a member of the upper classes (Earl of Oxford, Sir Francis Bacon). Even Malcolm X assumed Shakespeare didn't write them, for that very reason.

So it is with this theory that Obama didn't write his memoir.

Wow. I don't even know what to say to that. Obama went to Harvard, has a law degree, wrote a second book, and also wrote the best political speech I've ever heard. Somehow I find this a bigger reach than Obama being a Muslim terrorist sympathizer.
