That's my main problem with Mo. It seems he always pays too much. Holliday got paid too much, IMO. Loshe too much. Penny too much. Those deals to Lohse and Penny, and the holes both created by being on the DL, led to trading Ludwick for Westbrook.
Disagree with Holliday. It's not every day you get 31 year old LFers who are fairly consistently 5+ win players, and he got a good amount less than market value.
I think we have to see where Lohse is at for the next 2.5 years. Penny was a good deal at the time, he doesn't have a crystal ball. Lohse is on the DL with a freak injury.
What if he signed Carl Crawford to a 5/50M contract, and he tore his ACL next June, is that a bad signing because he got injured?
Trading Ludwick for Westbrook+Middling prospect is too much yes. Factor in money saved this year (WW deadline isn't past) and next year, I don't think this is a horrible horrible trade.
I'm not saying that Lohse and Penny were bad signings because they're currently hurt. The Lohse contract has been beaten to death. He guaranteed too many years and too much money per for a guy that couldn't even land a contract that previous offseason. He jumped the gun, IMO. He might prove the worth the next two years, but the first two have been a big bust.
Penny got a little too much money for my taste, but I really didn't mind the gamble. I'm just glad it was a 1-year deal.
Holliday got too many years, IMO. I doubt anyone was offering four years or the amount of money per year. Mo gave him 7 years. Yeah, right now, he might be worth it. In years five and beyond, I doubt it.
As for the trade, it's not horrible, and I'm certainly with you in the boat of waiting to see what else happens. I just think that with the money owed Westbrook, he should have been had for much less. Think about it....all Cleveland got was an average minor league pitcher. One guy. The Cards couldn't have topped that? Sure, they might save a little (very little) money, but make a move with Ludwick for something else. Not Westbrook. JMO

Just back from a vacation... I guess I'm 5% optimistic, 20% angered, and 75% confused. This could be a good trade for this year but still puzzle the heck out of me.
Oh well, Jake's our guy and that's fine with me.

I'd say I'm 1% optimistic, 1% angered, and 105% confused.

Just for argument's sake... would you guys have been alright with Westbrook and Asdrubal Cabrera for Ludwick?

You're not giving 110%

This makes no sense to me. Holliday was a free agent, thus was paid exactly what market value was.
Not this [expletive] again.
Who's on first?

Or Ludwick for Carmona.

Hell no. Carmona is worse than Westbrook.
