What's up with the NFL and these one-time tests, i.e. this and Wonderlic?

Just the way it is. There has to be a uniform system of analysis. A baseline.

It's the continuation of a general movement everywhere toward strict objective measurements. I think it would be interesting to give these combine type tests mid season to some star players and see how they do. I'm guessing some of the best players in the league won't be dazzling anyone with a 40 time or a 3 cone drill time or a vertical jump off the charts. Being fast and having explosive power is part of it, but there is a helluva lot more going on than that on every play. A linebacker reading a play, a running back finding the crease, a lineman with impecable footwork etc..ghostrunner wrote:What's up with the NFL and these one-time tests, i.e. this and Wonderlic?
Also like ACT tests these guys train specifically for this. When exactly is a linebacker ever going to need the skills he is learning to shave a tenth off of his 40? Most of what they work on is the start, getting in the right runners stance, etc.. That's where the meat is for shaving time off, and none of that is relavent to playing football.

All of those things are taken into consideration, also.jim wrote:It's the continuation of a general movement everywhere toward strict objective measurements. Isn't there a saying something like 'don't fall in love with a guy in shorts' because these metrics don't necessarily mean much if anything.
