Re: Ufcking 80s Music
Yes, there was a lot of schlock, but there was more than enough good music to survive the decade:
XTC's output was uneven, but I loved English Settlement and Skylarking.
Joan Armatrading's Walk Under Ladders
Elvis Costello's Imperial Bedroom
Billy Bragg's early albums
The English Beat
The Specials
Michelle Shocked (Short, Sharp, Shocked)
Split Enz (late stuff)
John Hiatt (a lot of good work in the decade)
Marti Jones (Used Guitars)
The Fall (I really like albums such as This Nation's Saving Grace)
Marshall Crenshaw's first two albums--the eponymous debut and Field Day
Gil Scott-Heron
Grandmaster Flash
Kurtis Blow (early)
Bill Laswell
Cabaret Voltaire
Jim Carroll Catholic Boy
Fear
The Nomads
The Plimsouls (a couple of their songs--Zero Hour and A Million Miles Away)
Let's Active (again, some songs, such as "Talking to Myself")
The Gun Club
some Psychedelic Furs
X
The Blasters
Los Lobos
Bonnie Raitt made her comeback
Lucinda Williams
Roseanne Cash
Lyle Lovett
Robyn Hitchcock and The Egyptians
Patti Smith
Tom Waits
The Fleshtones
Kirsty MacColl (Kite)
That's just a few. But there was, indeed, a lot of dreck.

I will always love Erasure. Even if I can't always deal with listening to it now.

One of the most influential aspects 1980's music, that often gets overlooked, is the birth of House (Chicago) and Techno (Detroit).
Some of the bigger names from the super early days:
House: Frankie Knuckles, Phuture
Techno: Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May

I like Tom Petty, but that's a load of BS.BW23 wrote:Bruno Mars' funk song is simply a mashup of Prince (79-82) and The Time.
The guy and song that was the hit of the Grammy's is just ripping Tom Petty.
People still love the 80's.
I'll just leave this right here:

Re: Ufcking 80s Music
My 80s experience centers around the videos I watched on MTV from probably 86-89.
Acts not mentioned yet (I don't think)
Guns n Roses
Bon Jovi
Van Halen
Cyndi Lauper
All staples of my MTV watching days.
Poison and Madonna also had plenty of videos in there, too, but I didn't like them as much as the others above.

Mini-rad (toddler edition) and I used to hop around the family room to this one.
