Realized driving home listening to NPR's excellent marketplace programthat I probably shouldn't be posting in this thread or many others, during busy season. Tired, uninformed, lots of of other stuff going on in life- that StupidLand USA gets under my skin more than normal.

* Anyways, check out NPR program today with segments on the market plunge. They make timely visit to the CDC and give a bit of background on how they work and coordinate. Segment on vulnerabilities of lean, JustInTime based mfg and effect on economy, when a supply link (such as Asia)gets walloped by something like coronavirus.

China indicates 80% of those infected show mild to few symptoms. Would it be better to just let this play out like any other flu season.

Regardless, it might just be the way it plays out. The mortality rate is still somewhere under 3% though it jumps into the double digits in the elderly.

This is my concern. My mother is 90 and was in the hospital for a week over Christmas break. The flu would probably kill her, and the corona virus would, too.

I just did! Not because of any real reason but I just have it set up to deduct automatically every Friday to go into my retirement account.


Edit: Whether or not this kills a lot of Americans it definitely is going to hurt a lot of businesses. I do a fair amount of 3d printing out of China and that has been halted since before the Chinese New Year. The company says they are running at 50% capacity and to expect lead times to be about double for now. It also is going to hurt parts businesses. We are going through one of our corn planters right now and each row unit has a sensor on it. 32 in all. We can only get 10 right now, the rest are on back order.

I work at Wash U, and a decent number of our students are Chinese. We've already had a professor's research assistant refused a Visa, and I think someone high up is desperately trying to work on some remote learning platforms so we don't have to worry about the next batch of students for next semester being refused entry.

We got an email yesterday and our company has implemented measures to try and keep everybody as healthy as possible to the point where travel in general is to be done only when absolutely necessary, even here in the states.

There are also six countries where travel to or from is strictly out of the question right now and anybody who has been anywhere near one of those countries is being told to work from home for 14 days before coming back into the office. If they were to develop even a slight cough, they can't go back into the office without a diagnosis from a doctor. They even banned meetings of more than four people in the same room and banned all face to face meetings with people from outside companies in those six countries.

There are other precautions as well but I can't remember them all. It was a looooong email.

At last our company is taking the situation seriously I guess.

I haven't looked at the #s but I suspect regular flu season has been worse than normal this yr - at least around here it has been. Thus, schools busn etc are coupling the Coronavirus info with the flu stuff info.
