The only chance the Cards have of surprising this year and being completive (this year or in any of the next few years) is dependent on Gorman and Walker hitting. So far in Spring Training they are a combined 2 for 23, 1 extra base hit, 1 walk and 14 strikeouts.Jocephus wrote: ↑February 28 25, 5:10 pmstl gets some late runs but lose 3-2
walker is 0-3 with 3 k's

Re: Spring Training 2025 Thread
Cardinals’ president of baseball operations John Mozeliak told reporters on Sunday that right-hander Zack Thompson will be sidelined for the next three-to-four weeks after suffering a tear in his left lat muscle.
Thompson will be shut down completely for that timetable before being re-evaluated. Even if he’s cleared to resume throwing at that point, it’s going to take Thompson a while before he’s built back up and ready to contribute, so don’t be surprised if he misses at least the first month of the regular season as well.
Cardinals reassigned LHP Quinn Mathews to minor league camp.
Mathews was a long shot to make the St. Louis rotation out of spring training, but he is widely considered one of the top pitching prospects in the Cardinals’ system, and he has a good chance of making starts for the team before 2025 comes to a close.

Guest: thoughts on ivan herrera? his 127 wRC+ for a 24 y/o catcher (with statcast that backs it up) was impressive
Ben Clemens: Yeah, I think that the Cards’ general disfunction around the catcher position obscured what a good season he had. I know he needs some work behind the plate but I think that they’ll give that to him this year, particularly with Contreras moving. The Cards have had a lot of ‘next great catching prospect’s over the years… maybe Herrera is the one to hit
Ben Clemens: no offense, but Pedro Pages definitely isn’t it, no matter how much the team likes his defense
Alby: “No offense, but Pedro Pages definitely isn’t it.” I see what you did there.
Ben Clemens: Man, I didn’t even mean it
Guest: “Cards’ general disfunction around the catcher position” remains a bit of a funny thing to me. Cause I agree with you re the perception of the Cardinals catchers and their defensive issues (which seems to evoke even more handwringing inside the org than outside of it) But Cardinals catchers were the 3rd best unit in MLB last year by fWAR (though still in the bottom half by total DEF)
Ben Clemens: let me put it this way — the players might be good, but the team behavior around them isn’t
Ben Clemens: it doesn’t have much to do with Contreras and Herrera. Certainly nothing to do with Pages, who’s a perfectly acceptable backup
Ben Clemens: It has to do with the team constantly talking like they hate their catchers, and then doing weird things like giving each of Pages, Herrera, and Contreras equal playing time even though their WAR broke down 0.5/1.9/2.5 at the catcher position

Re: Spring Training 2025 Thread
Mike Moustakas has retired from professional baseball.
Moustakas was cut loose last spring after failing to make the White Sox’ season-opening roster and will officially step away from the game as a member of the Royals, who will hold a retirement ceremony on May 31. The 36-year-old was a key part of Kansas City’s 2015 World Series title and spent eight years with the organization. A three-time All-Star selection, Moose finishes with a lifetime .247 batting average along with 215 home runs over 13 seasons in the big leagues from 2011-2023 that included stops with the Reds, Brewers, Angels and Rockies.
