I concur with thrill's analysis, solid opener. The whole Al Capone angle was neat and I hope they continue to feature the Chicago mob scene in addition to Atlantic City so as to expend the show's scope. I don't know how many twists and turns a period piece of this type can take set in just one city. It might start to get a little claustrophobic.
Alan Sepinwall, a great TV critic who writes for hitfix.com, says that by the time the season is at the mid-point, the Chicago stuff is as prominent or more than the Atlantic City stuff.

Hopefully it doesn't go the way of Carnivale and Rome, which were epic in scope and simply awesome, but only became popular after they'd decided not to bring them back for a 3rd season.
I'm assuming that the involvement of Terrence Winter and Martin Scorsese insulate it from that kind of thing.
Ron Howard couldn't keep Arrested Development from getting canceled mid 3rd season.
Well, pretty lousy premiere of The Office, 30 Rock wasn't any better, Community still doesn't quite click for me, and I made it like 2 minutes into Outsourced before I decided the lousy promos weren't deceptive.
Louie is over, It's Always Sunny is in its decline, Psych has gotten incredibly discordant from show to show, and Breaking Bad isn't back for some time yet. There's Modern Family, but it's B-grade to start with.

I need a TV show.
Maybe you just shouldn't watch TV. 30 Rock and Community were pretty damn good. Dexter starts Sunday.
