By time I was a teen, my Mom went to work full time. But bless her heart, in summers she'd make us breakfast and leave it for us, before she left. She just couldn't not do that. By time I got up, unless it was a cereal day - it was typically not good. Which brings back to all this chatter about scrambled eggs - IMO the only way they can be screwed up is by sitting there too long.

We called that "creamed, chipped beef" but only had that occasionally when having breakfast food for dinner, never in the mornings.

Me too, except I didn't care for Fridays in Lent, and would get up from our dinner table of 10 people and make myself some...you guessed it - scrambled eggs.

That was it. My mom called it sh-it on a shingle. Also - her favorite expression was "(Sh - it) in one hand, and wish in the other, and see which one fills up first".

And this wasn't breakfast, this was dinner. Breakfast was poptarts.

Guess what we paid for this: 2 Pastrami sandwiches no cheese on Rye, one cup of soup, one cucumber salad, one piece of cherry pie, and one cup of coffee (My wife smuggled in a water and she drank that). What would you guess that cost us?

Ham hocks and beans with ketchup - couldn't do it. My Mom finally gave up making me eat it and I got peanut butter those nights.

That's what my Dad called it too, because he says that's what they called it in the Army. My Mom didn't like that he said "[expletive] on a shingle" in front of me and my brother. My brother and I would laugh every time he said it, and my Dad would keep saying it because he knew we got a kick out of it. I don't know what they call it at hotels full of conventioneers or weekend tourists. I also don't know if my Mom made it properly and according-to-Hoyle. Probably not, as I doubt [expletive] on a shingle is "fine dining". I guess we kind of forget that this thread started as a rant about "fine dining" (although I still agree with 33 about scrambled eggs).

Well I can get this back to fine dining:

I'd rather eat (sh-it) on a shingle than at a fine restaurant.
