Did I just hear what I think I just heard on Mike and Mike in the Morning? Did Izzy just win the DHL Reliever award for the month of May, converting 10 of 10 closes allowing only 1 run?

Jason Isringhausen named winner of the "DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Month Award" for May

Jason Isringhausen of the St. Louis Cardinals was selected as the winner of "DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Month Award" for May, it was announced today. This officially sanctioned Major League Baseball award recognizes the most outstanding relief pitcher during each month of the regular season.

Isringhausen was a perfect 10-for-10 in save opportunities in May allowing only one earned run in 11 games. During the month, the Cardinals closer struck out 14 batters over 11.2 innings pitched while only giving up seven hits. The two-time All-Star is second on the Cardinals all-time saves list with 158 trailing only Lee Smith's 160 saves. The right-hander's 225 saves from 2000-present is second most among all relievers trailing only 2005 "DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Year Award" winner Mariano Rivera (New York Yankees). Isringhausen is currently tied for second in the Major Leagues with 18 saves.

In recognition of this honor, DHL will donate $1,500 to Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI), a MLB youth outreach program designed to increase participation and interest in baseball, encourage academic participation and achievement and promote greater inclusion of minorities into the mainstream of the game of baseball, in Jason Isringhausen's name. In addition, Isringhausen will be recognized in a special advertisement appearing in the June 7 issue of USA Today.

Yeah I don't recall seeing a quote in print but remember it being discussed a few times over at CT.

I too have seen/heard the discussion that Wainwright is slotted for the rotation, and I agree that on one level that makes total sense. His performance from the pen this season, particularly the motion on his pitches, makes one look forward to the days when he can throw 8 IP instead of 1 or 2.

However, one has to think about the future. Izzy makes near $9 mil this year and his effectiveness, as measured by baserunners allowed, is clearly waning. The more runners you allow, the more blown saves you are going to have. I don't know if he's under contract for next year, but I have to wonder if another option for closer will be necessary for 2007. Wainwright has the kind of stuff that really dominates. From a "stuff" perspective, Adam could be a closer. Is that his best use for this team? Well, I'd like to see what people here have to say.

Sidenote: I laugh now thinking of Deke1's endless pronouncements that Wainwright has no trade value and never will. Oh Cardstalk, you're full of experts!
