I, on the other hand, am very familiar with KenPom and Sagarin's rating systems. I think they currently do the best job of judging a team's true talent. At worst, the Big Ten was second behind the Big East. I'm not sure who else you could put up there this year. If you're thinking Big 12, you've got a bias.

The Big East is easily the best conference in basketball. I would have the Big XII and Big Ten a coinflip for second and third. I don't really care to know what computer ratings say when they produce plenty of flawed rankings and aren't appreciably better than human polls. Anyone that has a clue about college basketball would not rate Illinois the 20th best team in the country.

I'll concede the Big East is the best, but not by as much as you seem to think. The Big XII wasn't as good as the Big 10. Period. There's your bias. The Kenpom.com computer rankings paired with log5 analysis just got 26 of 32 first round games correct, including the entire East and West brackets. Anyone that has a clue about basketball and watches a lot of games would know Illinois was 1-8 in close games. Had they gone 5-4 or 4-5 in those game (a not unreasonable total and the typical result for close games) they'd absolutely be considered a low top 25 team. Illinois has underachieved this year. The talent's undeniably there. Have you read a single article about these guys in the last week? Almost everyone says they have the talent. When it's on display and things are clicking, Illinois can beat anyone. They were up 11 on the best team in the country midway through the second half (Ohio St. at home) and blew it, like they blew a bunch of games. Illinois played a tough schedule this year, and I'm glad they did. We'll see if the fifth seed from the Big 10 can hang with number 1 from the Big XII Sunday night. If Illinois shows up ready to play, they have a chance. The Morris boys should manhandle the Mikes down low and Kansas should win by 10 or so on a neutral court, but that's why they roll out the ball and play.

I have 27 out of 32 in my office pool with the West and Southeast perfect. Big [expletive] deal. The only truly surprising game of the entire first round was Louisville losing. It's been mostly chalk so far and probably won't get really interesting until the sweet sixteen.

That was smart of you to wait until Illinois won their game to come defend them. Coming in to the tournament they weren't any better than Missouri or Colorado or a bunch of other teams. They got way too much credit for beating North Carolina early in the season before they jelled, lost to Mizzou, and then played .500 ball in a solid conference mostly winning at home and losing on the road. Winning an 8-9 match up doesn't really change things.

Just by picking the higher seed you get 25 out of 32 with 15 out of 16 in the E and W regions. This isn't picking the Tampa Bay Rays to win the AL East.
