WASHINGTON — In the last few days in conference realignment, Maryland and Rutgers left the ACC and Big East, respectively, to join the Big Ten; Louisville switched from the Big East to the ACC; Tulane and East Carolina moved from Conference USA to the Big East (the latter in football only); Florida Atlantic and Middle Tennessee went from the Sun Belt to Conference USA; Denver traded the Western Athletic Conference for the Summit League; and the for-profit Grand Canyon University joined the WAC, becoming the first school of its kind to catch on with a Division I conference. The inevitable result of all this horse-trading: In 2022, the Pac-28’s University of Phoenix will play for college football’s national title in University of Phoenix Stadium. (They will lose to Alabama, the champion of the Confederate Football States of America.)

Grand Canyon will become the sixth member of the conference in 2013-14, joining California State University, Bakersfield; the University of Idaho; New Mexico State University; Seattle University and Utah Valley University

Cal State Bakersfield wrestles as an affiliate of the Pac12 while Utah. Valley wrestles independently but qualifies for the NCAA tournament via the Western regional, which is what Grand Canyon is planning to do- if Bakersfield leaves the Pac12 it will leave Oregon State, Stanford and Arizona State as the only members plus Boise St and CalPoly as affiliates- the Pac12 was not obligated to host a conference championship when Oregon stopped wrestling, it remains to be seen if they keep it going or release everyone to qualify through the regional (which Mizzou is attending this season I believe since no other sec- schools wrestle and their application to join the MAC for wrestling was rejected in favor of Northern Iowa- I kid you not).).
