I am a bit lost and haven't read all the deadspin and other links. Can someone catch me up to speed?

Is the new theory like this ? - Te'o was duped into falling for a fake GF online, eventually figured it out (or not?) at a point when it was more convenient/less embarrassing for him to keep perpetuating the story.

My question would be, who wduped Te'o in the first place (his cousin) and what was the motive? Were they just screwing around? Or were they building a sappy story on his behalf?

Uh, yeah, when girls do that, they usually don't fake a death though. Actually, it happens to like 99.99% of all pro athletes I'd guess and as far as I know, all of them are real up until now and none of them have fake died.

it is a fascinating story. i'd like to think he was duped (as bad as that sounds) 'cause if this is just another method of self-promotion then we'll have reached a new national level eh? even if he was duped i think he's got some explaining to do, 'cause it seems like he helped embellish the story. and i hate that i'm doing this but on re-watching some of the footage of when she "died" i cant help but wonder if he's acting and sometimes it doesn't look genuine (or that he's really trying to get tears, it doesn't happen and then he moves on) but i'm sure my brain is looking for that now.

maybe he was duped and after he realized it he/his family/his "brand" told him to kill her off to just get her out of the picture and they hoped to never bring it up again (which is pretty naive as well).

I'm just speaking from my friend's experience. This "fake" girl kept him on the hook for about a year and a half. All sorts of horrible things supposedly happened to her. Her mother was injured in a car accident, and the girl had to leave her well-paying job to go and take care of her mother. Eventually, she started asking my friend for money. He wasn't financially solvent enough to help her, so eventually she just "disappeared".

If Te'o's girl had some other people involved in the deception, it's very possible that they were in it for financial reasons. If Te'o told her (them) that he couldn't help them, they may have just faked her death to make the whole thing go away.

I don't know....... but I don't think it's unfathomable.

I think that speaks more to the media than anything else. The story was out there and he was the star player on an undefeated team. Sportswriters touch themselves thinking about stories like that, so it wasn't that hard for them to reach out and grab on to it and run with it.

IIRC, the first mention of it in public was in Sports Illustrated back in late September, well before he was a Heisman candidate. (although it obviously got played up by the press as the Heisman hype increased)

i dont know if there's a huge difference between top college and pro players though (if thats what you saying)...people know who's gonna go to the pros (even for just a shot). my brother (he's a KU alum) tells a story of seeing kirk heinrich at a bar and kirk was passed out/wasted in a booth with his friends and there was a line of girls grabbing his phone, putting their telephone number in it and then passing it to the next girl. these guys don't have a problem getting the attention of females.
