Ebisu. Sit down, tell them "omakase" and enjoy. It's out in the Sunset, just south of the panhandle of Golden Gate park. It's really great. Sit at the bar if you can. My buddy's wife was a server there 10 years ago and we went a bunch and it was always great. They got a Michelin star this year I believe. GREAT spot.

Locanda. Oh my god the pasta here, done by extrusion. This place is remarkably good.

-Dim Sum

Oof. So much good stuff. So much. Stagger in almost anywhere above the Chinatown Gates and you're probably fine. I like Lai Hong. If you want to travel, the Hong Kong Lounge out in the Richmond neighborhood is good. But really, almost anywhere.

-Coffee/pastries

Coffee. Blue Bottle. That's your #1. Then Sightglass.

Thai: Thai Stick

Sausage: Rosemunde.

If you want a remarkable meal there's a place that opened a year or so ago, I hit it a few months ago, it's called State Bird Provisions. They do dim-sum style dinner, with carts that work the room and you pick dishes off the carts. It's one of those places where the food is so good, and they're doing things in a way that's unique an fun and unlike anywhere else, that it's an experience you won't get in any other resto in the US right now. I PASSIONATELY recommend you hit State Bird Provisions. They are probably booked for the nights you're going but they hold a certain # back for walk-ins each night.

need to reread this thread. getting my wife a week at pastry school in SF for Christmas. the last day is her birthday and I will be joining her out there to celebrate then spend another week or so vacationing in or around SF.

Thinking Chez Panisse for bday dinner then a little vacation trip. Probably the rest of the weekend in SF then a few days elsewhere (Monterrey? Point Reyes? Sonoma?)

Go to State Bird Provisions. Totally worth it. Get there when it opens and the wait won't be bad at all, plus there's a good pub nearby that I can look up the name of.

Chez Panisse is a really good special occasion restaurant. That's a good call. If you can spend a few hours walking around campus at Berkeley and downtown there it's a nice time.

You do not want to miss State Bird Provisions. It's like no other contemporary American dining experience. The food is great and the experience is a whole lot of fun.

Monterey is a good call too, or go the other way to Napa/Sonoma for a day trip. If you're a wine guy Sinoma is more old school family places, Napa is a lot more of the bigger corporate wineries.

Chez Panisse because it's Chez Panisse. That place means a ton to modern American cooking. And my sister, a 25 year San Franciscan has never been.

So is CP still a great restaurant? I have a ton of respect for Alice Waters and longevity and consistency and great food is really more important than flavor of the month to me. But I do want to take my wife to a great restaurant.

Going to see if SBP works as well. Don't want to spend hours waiting in line.
