Righteous Gemstones was phenomenal. Just binged it over the past couple days and glad I did.

The scene where
[SHOW]
Kenny Powers is explaining the sex tape
is probably one of the funniest couple minutes of tv I've seen in some time.

heyzeus wrote:Gemstones really was fantastic. Of course I'll watch a second season, but the first ended so nicely, it almost feels like a perfectly encapsulated work, and it's risky to disturb that.
Agreed. The ending was perfect. Almost a shame to disturb it.

This final season of the Deuce is devastating. Jeez David Simon, I already watched Season 4 of the Wire once, don't hurt me again.

I'm going to miss The Deuce, but I do have a few complaints about the framing of the finale. Eileen was the heart of the show, not Vince. I'm sure James Franco is the big name and has the producer credit, but the final coda should've been Eileen's walk back through NYC of yesteryear. She's the one who meant the most to the show.

What about
[SHOW]
The scene where Edi Patterson tells Tim Baltz about her first "boyfriend" in the Outback Steakhouse? And at the end, in maybe the Line Reading Of The Year, Baltz gets up and in a cheesy Aussie accent bids her: "g'day"?

"I haven't boned a million guys I just said that so you'd think I was cool and want to be with me" is so god damn funny.

So is

I'm gonna move to Malibu beach shave my [expletive] and learn to surf.

Why are you gonna shave your [expletive]?

UGH SO I CAN SURF FASTER, JESSIE!!!

I listened to Edi Patterson on WTF with Maron, apparently she and McBride wrote a lot of Gemstones (including "Misbehavin'") together and have also written a feature film for Edi to star in that producers didn't have much interest in making but that now might get a little traction.

They're both legitimate geniuses at satirizing a very specifically American kind of person.

My favorite part of that exchange is Jesse & Kelvin no-selling the joke as if they're like, "oh dang, that's a good reason to shave your [expletive]."

Here's someone's bootleg of the extraordinary Outback scene on Youtube. It's very NSFW for language and subject matter.
