It was close enough that he thought he had a shot to get there. If he didn't think he had a shot, he should have pulled up and played the carom.
He was playing fairly shallow (surprisingly shallow, considering who was on, actually) so it was a long way to go and the ball was tailing away. Definitely not a routine play to make...perhaps impossible even...but regardless of all that, Taguchi didn't handle the situation well.
