New Strickland:

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=7172

Within this piece Andy says that the Blues won't be in the mix for the services of Daniel Briere or Chris Drury. They aren't willing to pay top dollar to get a big FA. I would like to know why? The Blues have the money and plenty of cap space.

I hope that is spin.

I trust the current powers that be to do the right thing.

That's what I'm hoping thrill. I heard Andy Strickland say this on XM also.

I don't think they are definitely out of the Drury stakes.

From the article:
Chris Drury, one of the top clutch performers in the league, is probably out of the Blues price range but will certainly hear from Jay Mckee and Doug Weight who would like nothing more than to see Drury playing in a Blues uniform next season.
By saying probably out of their range, I hope it is just speculation on Strick's part.

Other interesting parts of the Strickland article, re: Tkachuk:
Here’s what you can expect come July first regarding Keith Tkachuk.
The Blues will certainly be in the picture and will likely offer the power forward a two year deal.

Tkachuk won’t need to be the highest paid player on the Blues to be happy but like Bill Guerin these guys feel they owe it to the younger players in the league to reject a deal that is far less than market value.

Tkachuk will not hesitate to move his family if he feels there is a better opportunity out there. Tkachuk will know how much he’s worth and how much interest there is in his services come July first. All Tkachuk will want is a fair deal with a club that he feels has a chance to win.

One thing you can count on for sure is that Tkachuk’s days playing left wing are over. He is now a center and he has no interest in playing the left side anymore. That bodes well for St. Louis who want Tkachuk back to play center. They feel his strength on the puck down low in the offensive zone is unmatched by most centers in the NHL. It is nearly impossible to knock him off the puck. His ability to support in the defensive end has become an underappreciated part of his game.
I think if the Blues offer him 2/$6-7 million (which I think we will, same deal as Weight), he'll be here.

Concerning your frustration stlmark, I think the Blues realize that it makes no sense to buy a super expensive FA when we're rebuilding. Let Weight (3.5), Ruchinsky (3!!), Cajanek (2 :obucardheadbang:) and the (expected) Tkachuk (3-3.5) contracts expire.

While those higher contracts are in the works, guys like Stempniak, EJ, Oshie (next year), Polak, Scott Jackson (will play in Peoria next year. Thrill, you'll like watching him, he's Jackman-lite), Woywitka, McClement, Cash, Schwartz (next year) et all will get some experience and playing time on a team that is battling for the playoffs.

Finally, in 2-3 years when those kids have matured and we have some more Jarmo talent waiting in the wings, we can spend for a real scorer in his prime to make us real contenders.

Who needs Briere or Drury when you have Jammer? 3 goals in 3 games for Canada in the IIHF World Championships. Stempniak has 3 goals and 2 assists in 3 games for USA.

Other Blues:

Backes, USA (3 games, 0 goals-0 assists-0 points)
Brewer, Canada (3, 1-1-2)
Cajanek, Czech Republic (2, 0-1-1)
Jackman, Canada (3, 0-1-1)
Johnson, USA (3, 0-0-0)
McClement, Canada (3, 0-2-2)

Bacashihua is also playing for USA, but has not seen any playing time.

Part bump, part recent Strickland:
The Blues should think very hard about signing Buffalo Sabres forward Chris Drury this summer. A four year deal worth five million per season would be a wise investment if this organization is serious about winning. The Blues don't need 100 point scorers to take them to the next level.
Agreed.

Chris Drury is a guy that Blues fans would fall in love with. His numbers would not be as gaudy as they are in an ultra-talented Buffalo lineup, but I could see him provide 25-30 goals, 60 ish points and leadership with the Blues.

Oh hell yea, I would love to see Drury wear the Bluenote.
