They're going for generically interchangeable casinos? If so, that's a shame. I like that stuff. Thought it was part of the appeal even if you aren't on family vacation. Reno has many of the same features as Vegas, but with less spectacle, and it's dying.

I wouldn't go so far to say the casinos have become generically interchangeable. For instance, I think there are significant differences between the newer properties Wynn, Aria and The Cosmopolitan.

In the 90's there was the belief that Vegas should widen it's appeal and become a more family friendly destination to attract more people, hence the Disney type of properties like Excalibur, NYNY, Luxor, Paris, Treasure Island, etc. Well, the idea completely bombed because families don't spend much money on food, entertainment and gambling. Furthermore, people who do spend a lot of money don't want to be surrounded by a bunch of families. Obviously that is a poisonous mix for business. Since then Vegas got back to the basics by emphasizing "sin city" and "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas", and several of the themed casinos have gutted their insides to remove the kiddy vibe. Overall I think Vegas is better for the changes, but I can't help but feel nostalgic about the past.

Looks like we'll be heading out to Vegas I'm late august. Just booked our room & going to bs checking out flights tonight!

Since my parents own a timeshare we'll typically try to stay in something that's available on/around the strip area. My mom was able to book us a 3 bedroom presidential suite at the wyndham grand desert which I believe is just a couple blocks off the strip (by the MGM).

Love the results of this thread and have appreciated all of the suggestions and advice. I get on a plane at Midway around 7 tomorrow night and get into LA late, and then tomorrow morning my group picks up another buddy from the airport and we head straight to Vegas.
