they still would have lost.

And pretty crappy that their hc doesn't stick around for significant game in the school's history. NCAA football is so very screwed up.
Yeah, it is. This matchup should have never happened, and I realized that as intriguing as it was before the game started that it was only intriguing in theory. In practice, it sucked, and it became obvious within a quarter. My hat is off to NIU for surving a barage of punches and not going to their knees, those kids should be proud of themselves. But c'mon, that was a horrible football game because one team didn't have a chance. How the score wasn't 100-0 is beyond me.

edit - also, did you see the empty seats? I've never seen a big bowl game with so many empty seats. ANd what seats were filled many were vacated after halftime. I've seen that at some HS games where the band parents all go home - that seemed to be what it was like. Those shots from the blimp were not good. They list the attendance at 72,000 ... so that means that stadium must hold 120.

Congrats to NIU for making it respectable. But, yeah, it wasn't a game and everyone knew it wouldn't be going into it. Kind of feel bad for the travelers that went down and saw a boring game. At the same time, it is miami, so if you didn't have fun...that's kind of your own fault.

I went to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl in like 2001 when Illinois played LSU. I sold my ticket and went to a bar. What a good decision.

RE: attendance -NIU can't be a proud alumni-rich school. They mentioned the 26 or so buses of NIU fans - that is a lot, but can't amount to more than a few thousand fans. I must have seen that American flag shirt guy everytime they panned the NIU crowd.

I asked my Chi-area brother if NIU was catching much buzz in Chicagoland, he said no - it's Notre Dame all the time.

Even with the mismatch, that didn't stop the FL State players from chest-thumping like they were Natl Champs. Kids will be kids, I guess.

You mean the 1,200 people that made the trip down? Yeah I'm betting the Orange Bowl folks weren't very happy about that either. Part of the problem with the 1/2 empty upper decks.

Hey I'm going to Miami in a couple of weeks and not even watching a game, so I don't feel too bad for them either.

I don't know if I agree with that - maybe that's because I live far west and we've had several kids from our HS contribute to the program recently. The current is a fun name to sound - Santacantarina - he was on TV the first play of the game with the FSU player punched him in the face and got a 15 yard unsportsmanlike ... ex-Viking making an immediate positive impact. But for a directional school they are getting lots of love up here on the news and have all year.

woo hoo!

As for NIU, isn't it odd how we celebrate all the little Cinderella Directional University schools that get into the basketball tournament but get all pissy when one gets into the BCS?

I love how he just palmed the ball while picking it up like it was a loaf of bread.
