I'm sure that it's just an average over the years. Prospects ranked 1-10 over the past X years have given a surplus value of Y. Prospects ranked 11-25 over the past X years have given a surplus value of Z. Etc.pioneer98 wrote:
Saying a guy in the top 50 is worth "X" is confusing to me because guys generally rise in the rankings as they age, unless they flame out. So if Robert climbs the rankings and he's like the #10 prospect or something after next season, then what is he worth? I mean we're getting into an area where there is no clear answer. It's all about whether the Cards and White Sox projected him correctly or not. At this point he could still end up being a bargain for what the White Sox paid, or an albatross. Meaning: he still has tremendous upside, which is not something the Cards have much of right now.
When it comes to African American players, I could imagine there might be different reasons they would be reluctant to move to StL.Socnorb11 wrote:Wait........... we're still saying that Fowler didn't want to play in St. Louis because of Matheny, or something?
That's too bad. He'd be a nice player to have on the team, if he was willing. I wonder where he finally did sign??? Probably somewhere that was more appealing to him.

But I thought Price was all set on coming here - but Boston just paid more?MrCrowesGarden wrote:That the Cardinals don't just have to have the highest bid to have free agents sign here? That they now must pay a premium on top of that because of some sort of perception of the team/clubhouse/manager/city?

It is all about the money.

I agree. I think we have to pay more than just more for a lot of players now is what I'm trying to say. If Team A offers $10 million and we offer $12 million, the extra $2 million might not offset the negative perception. So, there's a premium of another few million dollars to balance that out.
