Edit2: maybe this is just something going over my head. Maybe you're suggesting people downplayed his value after we traded him, in a sour grapey fashion.

That's the thing. The market is greatly favoring buyers who are willing to take on salary. The Cardinals are in that boat. If they can't find an upgrade under these circumstances, they didn't do a very good job of finding a match.

this Gose guy sounds like he's fast (and not much else), but here's what I've read he's done this year in the minors: 36 SB's, 27 CS.

I'm not thinking anything that complicated. IMO Wallace has been overrated because his lack of defensive value was largely ignored; if you're putting together a list of top prospects, it's hard for you to look bad if you fill it up with guys with high OPSs. But even if the lists have Wallace appropriately ranked, the Victor Wang-type research has shown that all but the most highly rated prospects (top 25, maybe even top 10) are basically penny stocks.

FWIW BA's Ben Badler claims Wallace has been dealing with a wrist problem in 2010.

So how many different MLB organizations will Wallace have played for before he finally gets called up to the bigs?

I can only think of one prospect that's been traded two times, Chris Carter of the A's. Traded from the White Sox to the D'backs(for Quentin), then from the D'backs to the A's(for Haren).
