Re: TV Thread - beware, [expletive] can get spoilery
The North Water on AMC was pretty good. Feels like stuff I've seen before but it's well executed and I happen to enjoy that stuff. Definitely similar to The Terror in many ways, though maybe not quite as good. Man vs Man, Man vs Nature, etc....
I'm usually not a big Colin Farrell fan but he's a good fit for this at his age. Character is just an absolute brute. I'd totally forgotten the lead actor being in Godless, and I think he left more of an impression here.

Don't fault you for that.ghostrunner wrote: ↑December 8 21, 12:51 pmIt's dumb to be bothered about I guess, and maybe it's me being a crusty old man, but Dasha being in the show annoys me. Already don't care for the RS schtick and the Alex Jones thing is too much for me to get past.
I think they're fine though. They're just trying to annoy the haters and it works. They're doing a form of dated irony, I admit. They are [expletive]-stirrers but they still usually have good politics. I think Anna can have some dumb takes and blind spots at times for sure. I listen to laugh/be entertained and not to get political analysis.

The end of Succession season 3 is just perfect. The outcome was rooted in seeds the writers have planted throughout the show. And every one of the characters, who are each terrible in their own unique way, get [expletive] in a way that is corresponding to their own terribleness.
Except Logan. He never gets [expletive] once.

It was great. Both the last two episodes. Only thing I didn't quite buy was how they made it seem like Tom was the one who tipped Logan off that he needed to rework his divorce settlement. Presumably that's why he wasn't letting them in or at least should have known they might do it, so it felt off. Otherwise, loved all the sibling stuff.
They didn't get into it, but I like to think Geri, Frank, and Karl are somewhat elated that Logan may not be top dog anymore and hence have no interest in securing whatever future the kids may want.
From the outside the deal is so clearly the best thing for everyone, and the kids' being crushed is just silly and dumb, yet I confess to being bummed on their behalf.
Wondering if they pick up next season from this exact spot and the kids try to maneuver something with the other shareholders.

i mentioned upthread that this is main criticism of the show. not really sure how many more seasons are planned but i'll give it another season and then i'm out.heyzeus wrote: ↑December 14 21, 9:23 amThe end of Succession season 3 is just perfect. tom's role in everything does intrigue me though.
I'm just not interested in watching kendall constantly fumble the ball at the 1 yard line.
Also, as an aside, 9 episodes HBO? gimme a [expletive] break.

I read it was a 9 episode season because covid limited their writer and cast time and ability to film some stuff.go birds wrote: ↑December 14 21, 11:52 amAlso, as an aside, 9 episodes HBO? gimme a [expletive] break.heyzeus wrote: ↑December 14 21, 9:23 amThe end of Succession season 3 is just perfect. I totally bought that Tom would tell him. Shiv has told him that she wanted to sleep with other people and could not have cared less that he was possibly going to jail. What I didn't buy is that the kids would tell Tom and it seemed kind of obvious it was going that way since they made a point of it in the story. I'm still not sure what Greg's role is - maybe I missed something.ghostrunner wrote: ↑December 14 21, 11:51 amIt was great. Both the last two episodes. Also kind of sloppy in that Kendall is the one to think of this, not dozens of lawyers. Presumably that's a base that's been covered already, although maybe Logan didn't want to pay Caroline until he knew that he needed to. Seems like the siblings would talk to her before they confront their father.
Anyway, I don't know that I was ever really rooting for anyone, but I wasn't bummed that the kids lost. In a world of monsters and [expletive], at least Logan and Tom aren't the doofus whiny brats, born into it who can never get enough.

What I mean is Logan shouldn’t/wouldn’t have needed tipping off. He knows the clause is there and would have anticipated pushback, especially since he’s deliberately keeping them in the dark already.haltz wrote: ↑December 14 21, 9:38 pmI totally bought that Tom would tell him. I made up this interesting fact today: Did you know there isn't one spot in any Target where you can stand without visibility of a Baby Yoda? Do you think the licensing people at Disney/Marvel/Star Wars/Fox/ would have a seizure if we told them about Bill Watterson?

I did a search but I'm not sure the Turpin case was discussed anywhere--those 13 kids imprisoned and horrifically tortured by their bowl cut dad and mother. 20/20 did a special last month that's on hulu (Escape from House of Horrors).
There is video of the girl breaking out and talking to 911 and the police officer--and it is really shocking. She speaks with really odd rhythm, poor grammar, limited vocabulary and doesn't know what street signs or medicine are. It's like she's from an uncontacted tribe. Fascinating and heartbreaking.
Ultimately it was Bieber Fever that saved them. They're sadly also being totally failed in recovery by California and the County--which speaks to what a problem foster care is or can be.
