I don't think that anything's off-limits in joking or comedy - in fact I think that extreme vulgarity, and treating taboo subjects in a non-taboo manner can actually serve a purpose in society. Not everyone's going to agree with that, obviously.

That said, does that even count as a joke? Forget the horrible nature of what's being described, where's the funny?

How about the "horror in her eyes" and the punches to the face? Would that convince you they were talking about rape?

No! Are we all that serious? Can we just learn to take it as a joke? I'm sure everyone here has joked about something horrible. Does that make you a rapist or a criminal? No it doesn't.

I totally understand the free speech argument and actually agree with it to an extent (however, I don't think rape fantasies are a good use of the public airwaves). Still, I should hope that everyone who listened to that segment recognizes rape when they see/hear it. There is a serious problem with men not being willing to acknowledge that anything is actually rape: "It wasn't rape because she wore sexy clothes", "I knew she actually wanted it despite what she said," etc. So, I find it pretty disturbing when it is plainly obvious that a what is being described here is a violent rape, that people aren't willing to recognize it as such.

no, but we're not being paid by a large company with money at stake when we make those jokes. i seriously don't see how you can defend what they said. maybe you could defend them not getting suspended, but you can't defend what they said. that's blatantly offensive.

As far as I can tell, the joke is that it's funny to imagine putting powerful women back in their place through the use of sexual violence.

Edit: So, taking it as a joke doesn't really improve my opinion of the segment.

That's not remotely clever, or disarming or whatever, it's just dumb.

I mean, I understand the premise to that extent.

Yeah, not funny.

He's not defending what they said if you read his comments. He's saying comedy is comedy and they aren't saying you should go out and rape someone, it was a joke. People say things, I'm sure you have joke about something vulgar and I'm also sure you have laughed at some vulgar also. It doesn't mean you agree with it.

Thank you lazypenguin! That's exactly right.

I will defend O and A because I understand that it's comedy and comedy only. By joking around about something like this, O and A ARE NOT saying that it's ok to force yourself on women. In fact, O and A are 2 very good human beings.

For the record, recently, O and A had a video of some person getting carjacked as others around just stood and watched. They both questioned why nobody was helping the person getting carjacked.

and then followed that up by laughing as a deranged person talked about sexually assaulting an actual person

I think it is debatable that the segment in question is "comedy".

I also think it is debatable that Opie and Anthony are "good people".
