BouRye!!! FTW! I don't know it tastes like but I'm going to start saying that instead of Booyah!
Anyway, I've mentioned this on here, Old Forester is awesome bourbon for $20.

Some guy at Binny's told me that Rye was better for mixed drinks. He said blah blah blah there is more of this than that and it's the other side of the same coin with just more whatever, but that it cut through the mixer part better. He said for drinking straight up Rye was less preferable.

Re: Rant/Rave: Bourbon
You want a little pith on the orange zest. It gives structure. Best practice, you're expressing the orange zest over the drink then tucking it in. Try it twice: once with a thick piece of zest with some pith on back, once with a thin piece of zest with no pith. The thin won't express oil. You're also using it for attractiveness as a garnish and without a little pith for structure you're pretty much screwed in that department.

He's right. Rye for cocktails (overproof is best) and bourbon for sippin'.jim wrote:Some guy at Binny's told me that Rye was better for mixed drinks. Actually, it's almost time to sit down with the Pierde Almas brand ambassador and drink through their whole line of mezcal. Good thing I had a big lunch.jim wrote:Hey ladies it's past 9. Isn't it time for your morning tea with your sugar cubes and your orange pith?

Bye, bye, Ms. Chair Model lady. I dreamt that we were married and you treated me nice. We had lots of kids...drinking whiskey and rye, oh why'd you have to go off and die? Why'd you have to go off and die?

Re: Rant/Rave: Bourbon
Jameson is probably the most mellow whiskey on the planet and bourbon is sweet. Real men drink rye and scotch, not old lady whiskies.jim wrote:I have really gravitated toward Bourbon. I really haven't drank whiskey that long - 5 years maybe. I stuck with Jameson's because I knew it was something I liked, and pretty much only drank it in the winter when I was watching a Bulls game. Once I started branching out I realized that there were things I liked much better, and there were some things I liked less. Scotch - the more expensive it is the less I like it. I would be frightened to take a sip of a $100 a bottle Scotch - I'm guessing it tastes like mud. Irish Whiskey is ok, I definitely prefer Bourbon over Tennessee whiskey, and I've had Rye but only once and I wasn't all that impressed.
But without a doubt I have just meandered over to Bourbon as being my go-to whiskey.

Templeton Rye may be a fraud. Other craft whiskeys may be, too.

The company also announced plans to begin printing on its labels that the whiskey is distilled in Indiana. The issue gained national media attention after The Daily Beast published an article in July detailing how numerous "craft" whiskey brands buy their product from MGP Ingredients, a Lawrenceburg, Ind., distillery.

There's like three big distilleries in the whole country. If you're buying something because of the words on the label and not the brown stuff in the bottle, you're doing it wrong anyway.
