Kyle Boddy of the Hardball Times offers some analysis of the mechanics of the Cards' 2013 1st round selections. I don't know much about Boddy's background other than his own bios but he doesn't have much good to say about either prospect's mechanics.

That doesn't look like the type of mechanics you are going to be able to "work out". I'm not a fan of this guy at all from that video.

Cardinals left-handed pitching prospect Marco Gonzales struck out seven and allowed three hits in five innings for High-A Palm Beach.
Gonzales lacks the power stuff to be a top of the rotation option, but with a nasty change-up, an average curve ball, and polish, he could be in Double-A in June. Look for Gonzales to continue to dominate until he hits Double-A, where more advanced hitters will be a bigger challenge. If he continues to put up solid numbers, look for him as a solid rotation option for 2015.

Wacha was pitching in high-A in 2012, and joined the rotation in 2013. So it's certainly not unheard of.

Gonzales will probably be ready to be a depth option by the end of 2015. His polish and ability to move quickly were among his biggest positives.

Wacha was pitching in high-A in 2012, and joined the rotation in 2013. So it's certainly not unheard of.

Good point, though when I read "solid rotation option" I interpret it as an option coming out of spring training. Wacha didn't truly join the rotation until August 2013.
