I dont like the signing. Way too early for that. We had control of him for 2 years.

Not that I mind extending him, but by extending him now we just raised payroll for '07 and '08 and we already had him under our control for those seasons.

Perhaps setting the stage for a big #2 signing/trade and they wanted to make sure Carp was happy first???

Never mind. Scratch my initial thought. The Cards add incentives into their payroll figures anyway, so we didn't "raise" payroll this year. We were going to pick up the '08 option anyway, so that didn't raise payroll in '08 either.

We probably got him cheaper right now than we would after '08.

This was a good way to go, if it goes down as it's being initially reported.

BINGO! That makes a lot of sense. Man that came out of nowhere.

This also allows them to sign someone (i.e. overpay) without it affecting Carp in anyway.

Given the ever-increasing rate for pitchers in the offseason frenzy, isn't it a good move to pay him for those future years now?
