Is a team intentionally scheduled two games in a day by MLB? Or do teams set these games up themselves?

I believe that teams request them. I'm not really sure how ST games are scheduled for sure.

Teams use them when they have too many players in camp and still want those players to get playing time. I would be tough to see which backup CI you want to keep if you need to committ 5 innings to the starter and then you are stuck with only a few innings to fit 2 other guys. This way, there are more innings to go around and the coaches can get a little larger sample size. I dont know how they are scheduled, but I remember last year the Cards and Marlins both wanted to schedule another game to look at some players so they just got permission and scrimmaged between the 2 teams.
