CAMP CARDS: Mulder’s New Ride
By Derrick Goold

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — He isn’t sure how to ride it and isn’t sure he ever will, but Cardinals’ lefthander Mark Mulder commissioned a chopper specially designed to mark the World Series championship, complete with a baseball-shaped oil tank.

His plan is to auction or raffle it off for charity.

In the offseason, as he was weighing offers from Cleveland and Texas and a chance to return to the Cardinals, Mulder worked with custom motorcycle shop Ssinister Choppers, of Scottsdale, Ariz., to create a motorcycle loaded with Cardinals’ and World Series logos and touches. The chopper is nearing completion back in Scottsdale and Mulder is not weighing what to do with it.

He knows he wants to have a piece of it signed by the entire 2006 team and is plotting how to ship it around to the scattered members. He’s begun coordinating a way to use it to raise money for a charity.

And he’s showing off pictures of what it looks like so far.

The bike will feature pennants from all 10 of the Cardinals’ World Series winners. It has the birds on the bat as the focal point of the chopper’s body detailing, a World Series trophy staring up at the rider, an interlocking S, T and L that makes the front appear like a batting helmet …

Well, shoot, this is a blog. So better to show than tell.

Mulder, meanwhile, continues his rehab, which will stretch a few months into the season. He is strengthening his surgically repaired left shoulder and on Thursday he was out in the batting cage working, lightly, on throwing the ball through his delivery. He pops a baseball ball in a sock and goes through a slow, deliberate delivery, releasing the ball as if it were a pitch. He then tugs up the sock and continues the routine again.

That's very cool! I wonder if he could deduct the amount it ultimately sells for from his taxes or only the amount it cost to build?

I think that's just great that he recognized the history of the team. It's refreshing to see a guy so proud of his accomplishment like that, sometimes we think it's all $$ but when I see something like that I remember that it is more than just that for most of them.

That's an interesting question. Typically, you can only deduct the amount that you spent on an item. That prevents you from donating a product that has astronomically inflated and getting a true gain from it (e.g. house you bought for $150,000 that is now worth $1,000,000, resulting in an $850,000 tax break). The "benefit" to donating items like the motorcycle or corporate stock is that you don't usually have to pay capital gains tax. So, Mark should get a tax break from all of the time and money he put into the bike. But, not for the final auction price.

Oh yeah, and great motorcycle.

******

Had to edit this to add a question? What in the world makes a guy who doesn't even ride a motorcycle to commission one?

I'm having trouble getting my head around this routine... anyone understand this?

Oh,,, yeah,,, sweet ride even to a non-cycle guy.
