Narveson clears waivers, down to AAA

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Somewhere along the lines the reportial wires were crossed and lefty Chris Narveson was understood as the starter for today’s game againt the Mets, with Braden Looper (intriguingly) starting a minor-league game back in Jupiter, Fla. Well, Narveson is officially in Triple-A today — having cleared waivers — and Matt Ginter, a Memphis starter, is up to open today’s game at Tradition Field.

Ginter made 14 starts for the Mets in 2004, going 1-3 with a 4.54 ERA.

I thought it was assumed someone would claim him. I guess this is good news?

Ben Hendrickson cleared waivers earlier in the week, so not a sure thing. But a possibility.

I'm curious how that happened so fast. He must have been outrighted on Tuesday morning at the latest and I'm surprised no one reported that, unless I'm missing something.

Yeah, it's good news in one sense. It means we'll have the rights to him for another year, and immediately makes him the best or second best option as a callup starter. Depth is never bad.

It's kind of bad news to those who hoped to get something in a trade for him.

Trades are becoming increasingly difficult to pull off, since the trade value of young prospects (AW and Reyes, not Narveson) has skyrocketed at the same rate as the ridiculous FA market salaries. It's hard to get anyone of value out of someone like Narveson, Rincon, etc.

I am surprised that he cleared, but I guess other GM's aren't that interested. I thought the Nats might have snapped him up.

He probably cleared because of the relatively low number of innings he has thrown thus far(on purpose?), the fact he has significant injury history and that he would have to stick on the 25 man roster or be exposed to waivers with his new club.

I believe he could still be trade bait if he now starts throwing a lot of innings or gets off to a hot start in AAA.

That sounds like Jocketty to me. He's the kind of GM that would intentionally not throw a pitcher like Narveson in the spring to retain his rights.

It's a good move. I still maintain that he's more valuable to us as starter insurance than he is to other teams as a lefty reliever.
