For a story I was working on for Sunday’s Cardinals Preview Section — insert gratuitous tease here — Bob Gibson told me some stories about being Stan Musial’s teammate. Little used in those years, he said he used to fall asleep at the end of the bench. It was Musial who would walk down and give him a wakeup nudge when the game was over. Gibson also served as Musial’s personal batting practice pitcher.

That goes against “everything you know about pitching,” Gibson said of having to feed four-seamers down the middle of the plate.

So, I asked how he would get Musial out.

“I didn’t worry about getting guys out,” Gibson said. ”I’m cocky enough to think I would have gotten him out. Oh yeah. Got Mays out. Aaron. Rather than figure out how to get them out, I’d rather think they had to figure out they would hit me.”

I really like Gibson. He's a quote machine. He could probably pitch today and do a better job then Marquis.

I first met Gibby at a Bar in Downtown St. Louis in the early 90's.
It had been a long day of travelling, watching a Cards Game and drinking to excess. My buddy leaned over to me and said "See that guy at the end of the bar? That's Bob Gibson". I was too inebriated to actually see that far so I pointed in that direction and said "Where? That Guy?" I was pointing right at him maybe 3 feet away.

Gibby turned to me, scowling and said "You know, it's not nice to point"

This was a true brush with greatness...

"Have you ever thrown a ball 100 miles an hour? Everything hurts. Even your ass hurts. I see pictures of my face and say, 'Holy [expletive]', but that's the strain you feel when you throw. I had one of those faces you look at it, man, and say, 'Man he's an ass-hole.' Could be, depends on if you pissed me off or not."

FWIW, Gibby tells the Musial-waking-him-up story in his first autobiography (the one that came out in 1968), "From Ghetto to Glory".

It's a crime the way Solly Hemus almost destroyed Gibson as a pitcher.

One of my favorite quotes about Gibson was from McCarver:

"I remember one time going out to the mound to talk with Bob Gibson. He told me to get back behind the batter; that the only thing I knew about pitching was that it was hard to hit."
