cubs are 12th..

here's the cards write-up

The good news is that Jim Edmonds might be able to go by Opening Day. The Cards will open the season with Braden Looper as their fifth starter. He’s not a good bet to succeed in that role. One key will be getting Mark Mulder back as soon as possible.

What am I missing about the D-Backs that warrants them getting the number 7 ranking?

Oh yeah, I agree that they have a good young team. But I wouldn't speculate them that high just yet.

i'm with you.. pre season power rankings as a whole are pretty worthless..
but i thought it was interesting that the cards were so low...

Yeah, but we'll prove that to be wrong soon!

Not to mention that apparently this guy figures them to be the second best team in the NL, which won't happen. I don't even think they'll win their own division.

He definitely went out on a limb with his first few picks as well. *rolls eyes*

All in all, however, these rankings look fairly accurate at least right now(especially when you look at the bottom 15 teams). I wouldn't place the Cardinals as low as 15, but I wouldn't place them any higher than 10, for example.

The D'Backs are a real mystery team. They've got it in them to be a pretty good team. They have a great blend of youth with super studs like Drew, Quentin, Jackson, Chris Young, and vets like Webb, the Big Eunuch, Livan Hernandez, Byrnes, Orlando Hudson....

I wouldn't be surprised to see them end up that high by the end of the year, but generally I'm with you guys. I'd like to see them show it on the field first. The Eunuch especially is a question mark.

The Cubs may have the NL’s most powerful lineup (Alfonso Soriano, Aramis Ramirez and Derrek Lee should combine for 100-plus homers), but the rotation behind Carlos Zambrano will be the key. In particular, Jason Marquis and Wade Miller need to defy expectations. It’s a weak division, so the Cubs have a very real shot at the post-season.
They aren't really saying anything here, everyone knows the rotation has questions.
