Drew said Boston's passion for baseball seems similar to that in St. Louis, where he played six years. His early impression is that Boston fans won't distribute cheers to the opposing team as liberally as they did in St. Louis.

I honestly don't know enough about the vocality of Boston fans. I know they're a passionate bunch (even the bandwaggoners).

Do they boo their own players like the Yankees fans do with ARod?

Will Drew be singing a different tune when he's slumping or missing games due to sore whatever's and is hearing it from these fans that are so hard on the other teams?

We've seen a disturbing trend of booing our own here, though I still don't think it's quite as bad as some of the more venomous places out there; I can't imagine it's much better in Boston.

They are vocal, and they will boo their own if need be. Not to the extent of Yankee or Phillie fans, but certainly they aren't bashful either.

But J.D. is absolutely right. During the '06 World Series, Cardinal fans were actually praying that our players would screw up so Detroit would have a chance to win. And the 2002 NLCS when he couldn't throw out David Bell, who runs as fast as my 71 year old grandfather? We stood up and cheered as the Giants won the pennant. It was just a great moment.

Now, I'm eagerly awaiting the official J.D. Drew Spin Control Squad to barge into this thread and say "BUT HE WALKS DOOD!~"

Meh...he's just playing to the Boston fans. Nothing wrong with that.

I dunno; I'm not reading into his comments what y'all are.

It sounds to me like he's acknowledging that the Boston fans are a lot more partisan than our fans; our fans will give a good hand to an opposing player who makes a good player - in Boston, they won't do that... nor will they cut their own players any slack, as Edgar Renteria discovered to his discomfort.

Our fans are - at least traditionally - a lot more even-handed and reasonable than either Boston or New York fans. That's changing, of course, ever since the new fans started coming in during the McGwire years, but I think it's still more-or-less true.

But that does not mean we're rooting for the other teams or the other players to do well against us; it's more of a "respect your opponent" kind of thing - and that's something they won't do in Boston.

That type of fan base has its downside. How much crow are they eating in NY right now over Arod? Of course, they'll rationalize that it's in season production and when it counts he disappears. Don't agree with it, but that will be the rationale.
