LD % and BABIP

I understand the concept of BABIP (Batting Averages on Balls in Play) however how does LD (line drive) rate relate to it? Let's make this a primer for everyone:
1) What is BABIP? What is the average BABIP?
2) What is LD? What is the average LD rate?
3) How do they relate to each other?

Average BABIP is around .280-.285
Average LD rate is around .160-.165
In general, BABIP = LD + .12
edit - I'm not 100% sure of those numbers, they are just off the top of my head.

It would be cool if some of our stat gurus could plot BABIP vs. LD% and determine correlation and R-squared.

good stuff.
you can also get a more accurate correlation if you include
HIWTA%

What is that? Understanding these metrics is like learning a new language.

Average BABIP ( (H-HR)/(AB-K-HR) ) in the NL was almost exactly .300 in both 2005 and 2006. In the AL average BABIP was .308 last year and .298 the year before. In the NL it's .292 thus far in 2007.

Thanks for the correction greenback. How about LD rate, is it about 12% below BABIP?

I think maybe Michael started this post for that very reason. I admit, I have no idea what HIWTA is.
