Tough day, just trying to take my mind off things...

DENVER (AP) -- Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki turned a rare unassisted triple play, and the Rockies beat the Atlanta Braves 9-7 Sunday on Matt Holliday's two-run homer in the 11th inning.

One of the rarest plays in baseball.

DENVER -- Rookie shortstop Troy Tulowitzki gave the Coors Field crowd something to cheer about Sunday, once they recovered their dropping jaws.
In the top of the seventh inning of a tied game, with runners on first and second and nobody out, Chipper Jones hit a line drive at Tulowitzki, who snared the ball in flight, stepped on second to double up Kelly Johnson, and tagged Edgar Renteria just between first and second for an unassisted triple play.

Just to be safe, Tulowitzki fired the ball to Todd Helton at first, but three outs was sufficient on the play.

The play was the 13th unassisted triple play in Major League history, with 12 in the regular season and one in the 1920 World Series. The last unassisted triple play was completed by the Braves' Rafael Furcal on Aug. 10, 2003.

I was at the game when Furcal turned that unassisted triple play against us. This one turned by Tulowitzki happened almost EXACTLY the same way. The only difference (IIRC) is that in this one, the count was full, so the runners were off with the pitch. The one against us was a hit-and-run put on with Woody Williams at the plate. A lot of things have to go just right to turn three by yourself--incredible.

At the game where it happend to us, the entire stadium was stunned for about 3 innings.

The story I linked to had a typo in it that I fixed, now I notice that the whole sentence has been re-written.

Ha! I counted 5 outs on that play.

1. Linedrive.
2. Touch 2nd
3. Tag a runner.
4. Touch 2nd again
5. Throw to 1st.

He almost got 'em through the next inning.
