"Trapped" movies with ensemble casts

Post by ghostrunner »

OK, so this is a weird rant. But these are the kinds of movies I'm talking about:

Speed
Zombie movies (i.e. The Night of the Living Dead)
Saw 1 and 2
Cube

Groups of two or more people stuck in a situation, and invariably at least one of them is the most irrational hot-headed human being ever. Another is always completely useless. I just saw "Saw 2" (two movies in and I still don't get the fascination) and the guy who looks like Pujols completely disregards the idea of cooperating for no apparent reason other than he's just a jerk. At least justify this behavior somehow and develop the situation a little.

And for the love of god, coax a little more than "really angry and yelling" out of your actors.

Irwin Allen was the master of the irritating-disaster-film-with-B-list-cast.

Shelley Winters in The Poseidon Adventure was all-time classic B-list-actress-portraying-uselessness.

Awesome reference.

I was referring to the 1990 remake of NOTLD, FYI. It's horrible anyway.

My fave is the Dawn of the Dead remake from a couple years back. Brian Gunn's (of the old Redbird Nation blog) brother/Jenna Fischer's (Pam on the Office) husband wrote the screenplay.

Yes, Dawn of the Dead was good (Ving always rocks). I enjoyed 28 days later as well.

I would put "Shaun of the Dead" in there too. But I love that movie.
