MO=Missouri

Post by cardsfansince82 »

My name tag at work says, "Ryan from Rolla, MO." A minimum of three times a day I have some variation of "What made you decide to move here from Montana?" or "Wow, Vegas must be a big change from Montana." It would be one thing if these were tourists from other countries but these are people who would appear to be educated adults who have lived their whole lives in the US. At this point I usually chuckle and gently correct them that MO is for Missouri. I guess it's not a huge deal that people aren't well-versed in state abbreviations but you would think people would encounter these things often enough in their daily lives to know. Until tonight when I experienced a new low in stupidity never encountered before and I had to rant about it.

Moran: So Montana huh? Must be a lot different living in Vegas now I bet.
Me: Actually MO is Missouri, sir.
Moran: Oh yeah. My bad.
*awkward silence*
Moran: So Missouri eh? Guess you moved out here to get away from all those hurricanes.
Me: *speechless*

My brain wasn't even able to process this let alone formulate a response. Surely you are aware Missouri is in the Midwest. Meaning the middle of the country. It's separated from the Gulf Coast by two entire states. Did you watch the news and hear about all the devastation in Missouri? Better yet have you ever come across a map of the US and paid a shred of attention? How do people like you even survive day-to-day life?

Can you change your name tag?

Ryan from Mississouritana

should shut them up.

PS we'll all assume you spelled Moron "Moran" ironically. :)

If you meet a dude named Flave in Vegas, say "Hey, aren't you Statman's brother?"

I've visited many different places and when I say I'm from Missouri, you wouldn't believe the number of people who have NO CLUE where Missouri is located. I know where every state is in this country. I guess I thought most people did too. I notice it more on the east and west coasts. I guess nothing else exists outside of their little worlds.

I actually had someone argue with me that MO and IL didn't border each other. I'm like "uh, I've lived there my whole life. I think I would know."

I also met a couple people who had heard of St. Louis, but never Kansas City. Thought that was strange too. But hey, give STL some props. :thumb:

I never said "Missouri" - I always said "St. Louis" when I was asked where I was from.

Even when we were in the World Series, like literally a night we would be on national television - I'd get a "So where is St. Louis? What state is that in?"

Lots of times I'd get weird guesses like, "Idaho".

To people that live close to the coasts everything is just a blur between the coasts I think.
