Speaking of good pitching in Springfield... (Salas)
What's the deal on this Salas guy?
I see he just turned 23 and is pitching in AA, so a little bit old I guess. But he has a 1.78 ERA and 51 strikeouts to 8 walks in 30.1 innings. Wow, that means 51 of his 91 outs were via the K.
Is he legit?

I would have to say he is legit, Cardinals ponied up more than 200K to buy this guys contract from Mazatlan.Secret Weapon wrote:What's the deal on this Salas guy?

Stats in Mexico in 2006
Salas went 8-2 with a 3.02 ERA for Saltilla before going 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA in 26 appearances for Mazatlan in the winter leagues.
Stats at Palm Beach in 2007
Appeared in 16 games for the Palm Beach Cardinals, including four starts, finishing with a 2-3 record and a 5.26 ERA.
Scouting report on him from last year:
Three pitches, fastball with average velocity with late life to it, a power curveball that he varies his angle on, curveball is his out pitch. Changeup is his 3rd pitch hasnt thrown it much but has potential.

The curveball is devastating. It's just laughable to watch AA hitters try to hit it...jdk82 wrote:I would have to say he is legit, Cardinals ponied up more than 200K to buy this guys contract from Mazatlan.Secret Weapon wrote:What's the deal on this Salas guy?

With two good pitches and a third that is a "show-me" pitch right now, would he project as a reliever? With all the young power relief arms we have, it may be in his best interest to develop that change and try to make it as a starter.

I would guess at this point there are enough reasons the organizations believe he can't cut it as a starter because with 2 plus pitches and a servicable 3rd that is a repitore of a starter. So 'm saying he is going to be a very nice 8th inning guySwingingbunt wrote:With two good pitches and a third that is a "show-me" pitch right now, would he project as a reliever? Welcome. Salas also had a few starts in Palm Beach last year and didn't show much. I agree that his future is probably in the bullpen.TomW wrote:I would guess at this point there are enough reasons the organizations believe he can't cut it as a starter because with 2 plus pitches and a servicable 3rd that is a repitore of a starter. If you like good arms out of the bullpen, a guy down at Palm Beach coud be following very soon.
Fransico Samuel
28.1 IP 10 R 7 ER 15 H 43 K his only problem and what seems to limit him at this point is 22 walks, although Chris Perez has shown you can still be successful with dominating stuff and control problems

It amazes me what a difference a year can make. Last year for GCL Cardinals he started 6 of the 13 games he played in.TomW wrote:If you like good arms out of the bullpen, a guy down at Palm Beach coud be following very soon.

0-4 9.53 with a .309 BAA
I would like to know how he fared starting compared to relieving last year. I can only find splits for this year and he hasnt started.
