This would definetly be a white-flag move if its true.
Cardinals shopping pitcher

A little birdie says the St. Louis Cardinals are shopping ex-Twins pitcher Kyle Lohse for prospects before Thursday's trade deadline, mostly because they're not sure they'll be in the playoff hunt and because they figure the 29-year-old right-hander won't be affordable with high-demand agent Scott Boras. Lohse is 12-3 with a 3.68 earned-run average.

I don't blame Moz for doing this, if it's true.

I like this move if it happens.

Cheap 1-year deal
Career year
Move him for prospects

I like it.

His value will never be any higher, and he's almost certain to regress some before the year is over.

That being said I'm not sure I can trust the source(and I know it's just rumor mill).

I have a strong suspicion that a lot of what Mo will or will not do is based on Carpenter's start on Wednesday.

I don't know myself. I mean, it's really not fair to the team or its fans to be sellers when they're 2 games out of the wild card, regardless of what anyone thinks their realistic chances are. They are well pass the half-way point and are still in contention. Carp and AW are due back. This team is exceeding all expectations.

I'm not advocating trading away our youth for a short-term rental at this point. Any trades made now should serve the purpose of improving now and down the road, which makes the liklihood nill.

I understand that nows the time to get return, but we'll still get draft picks after the year. I just can't see trading Lohse at this juncture for prospects. Moz has to give this team a chance.

What could we realistically get for him?

My only beef with it is... what will you get for him? Are other teams really clamoring for Kyle freakin' Lohse to push them over the top in their respective races? And will he be a type-A guy at the end of the year? If so, wouldn't you rather just have the two picks, and keep your (minor) shot at the playoffs intact?

But I don't mind if they deal him. His value is about as high as it's ever been. If they can get something truly valuable for 2009 and beyond, then you might as well go for it.

Completely agree. Selling should not be an option with 53 games to go. The Cards still have a legitimate shot to make the playoffs.

A career year from Kent Bottenfield, and Adam Kennedy begat JimEd, so there's a pretty good precedent.

OTOH, this team is close to the playoffs, and given that chance I don't think you need to play beyond the season that's in front of you. Give up anything to improve the team, no. But there is no guarantee that we will be in shape to make the playoffs next year or any year after that.
