Baseball Mogul 09

Post by PujolJunkie »

I'm actually contemplating doing some kind of 2009 Cardinals simulation with Baseball Mogul 09 as soon as all of the bigger named free agents go where they may. I don't know if anybody would be interested in reading something like that and it's far from being an accurate predictor but I love this game -- I'm addicted. As soon as I finish up the roster updates, I might start doing some simulating and seeing what comes out.

In case you don't know what BM09 is http://sportsmogul.com/games/baseball2k9.html

I just wanted to post this in here, just because I found it kind of fascinating. With BM09, you can simulate multiple seasons at once, going back as far as 1901. So I started in 1901 and simulated 108 years to April 1st, 2009. Everything was randomized. The draft. The players performances. Salary demands. Everything. So here's a little view on how everything went over those fictional 108 years:

All Time HR List:
1. Willie McCovey 702 (MLN/ATL, SDP)
2. Roger Repoz 625 (STL, SEP, MIL)
3. Kelly Gruber 622 (TOR, COL)
4. Darrell Evans 621 (NYY, TOR)
5. Johnny Bench 600 (BAL, TOR)

All Time Wins List:
1. Walter Johnson 482 (CHW)
2. Robin Roberts 470 (CIN)
3. Bob Gibson 426 (DET, HOU, SDP)
4. Kid Nichols 423 (BSN)
5. Cy Young 415 (CLV, STL, BOS)

Pujols ended up with the Diamondbacks, didn't enter the league until 2003 and has won 3 MVP awards already with 256 career HR.

Roger Clemens ended up being not so good, going 285-279 in his career with a 4.49 ERA and going 1-15 in his final year with the Rockies in 2003 with a 7.79 ERA.

Hank Aaron played 14 years and hit just 263 homeruns for the Dodgers.

Bonds played 19 years, putting up 471 HR for Milwaukee and one year with the White Sox.

Carpenter still ended up with Toronto, but with a 28-65 record and career ERA of 6.96. His lowest ERA in a season was 5.16.

John Gall is an 81 rated player who hit 24 HR, 136 RBI in 2008 in Triple A in 140 games, along with a line of .392/.485/.652/1.137

Stan Musial still made the HOF, although less impressively and with the Philadelphia A's and 80% of the vote. He hit only 191 HR and had 2,320 hits. Ellis Burks, as of 2009, has nearly 4 times as many homeruns and 700 more hits.

Finally, Babe Ruth hit 355 HR, 1732 RBI and 2,116 hits. All with Boston.

This is where you can see the clear flaws in the game. A lot of the time, one team will be at a distinct disadvantage if they get deep in debt early on or if another team manages to sign 2 or 3 HOF caliber players. It's obvious where these cases take place. IE: Royals, Indians on the bad side, White Sox, Twins on the good side.

Championship Counter (World Series appearances in parentheses):

NL East

1. Atlanta Braves - 13 (25)

2. Philadelphia Phillies - 3 (6)

3. New York Mets - 0 (1)

4. Florida Marlins - 0 (0)

5. Washington Nationals/Montreal Expos - 0 (0)

NL West

1. San Francisco Giants - 13 (32) (Were in the series 15 out of 16 years between 31 and 47)

2. San Diego Padres - 2 (5) (Were in the WS 5 out of their first 6 years in the league. Aided by getting Willie McCovey in the expansion draft. That was their only reason for excelling. They haven't finished above 3rd in 36 years)

3. Los Angeles Dodgers - 1 (1)

4. Colorado Rockies - 1 (1) (Won a WS in their very first year, futile since then)

5. Arizona D'Backs - 0 (2)

NL Central

1. St. Louis Cardinals - 7 (13) (Have been in the playoffs every year since 1992, 17 out of 18 years and have won 100 games 12 times out of the past 16 years)

2. Pittsburgh Pirates - 5 (17)

3. Houston Astros - 1 (1) (Have not finished above 5th place since 1967, only above 3rd place in their WS year in 65)

4. Milwaukee Brewers - 0 (2)

5. Chicago Cubs - 0 (2) (Some things never change. The Cubs have only been to 2 WS and have only been to the Playoffs 5 times in 108 years)

6. Cincinnati Reds - 0 (1) (Worse than the Cubs)

AL East

1. New York Yankees - 6 (11)

2. Boston Red Sox - 5 (18)

3. Toronto Blue Jays - 4 (4) (Won the WS first year in league, won 100+ games first 9 years of existence with 8 of those years resulting in the playoffs)

4. Baltimore Orioles - 0 (5)

5. Tampa Bay Rays - 0 (0)

AL West

Los Angeles Angels - 4 (6)

Oakland Athletics - 1 (5) (In Braves fashion, have won the AL West 14 years in a row, and managed to get out of the first round 6 times)

Seattle Mariners - 1 (1)

Texas Rangers - 1 (1)

AL Central

Chicago White Sox - 26 (30) (More or less the Yankees. Having 20+ years of Walter Johnson helps)

Minnesota Twins - 13 (21)

Detroit Tigers - 0 (3)

Cleveland Indians - 0 (0) (Worse and worse and worse. 9 straight years with 100+ losses)

Kansas City Royals - 0 (0) (Have never won their division and have lost 100 games 32 times out of 40 years)

I was this close to getting this game and when they kept delaying the release I saw more bad reviews of it and cancelled my pre order. I don't seem ubernerd enough to enjoy this game...

It's pretty flexible as to what you can do in the game. As I said, there are some balance issues, but they can all be easily solved by tweaking some settings and such. It's really fun after you get the ball rolling. It takes some skill to manage your minors and know when to call guys up and send them down and so on. I personally love it.
