Where is Descalso?

Post by 6manfan »

He didn't appear in the double-header for Memphis. His name is not on either the Memphis or the Springfield roster. His name doesn't appear in the Minor League Transactions column of Baseball American for Sept. 1. I have seen no other references to him. Has he been kidnapped by aliens?

This article says he's on Team USA, whose website has training camp listed as Sept. 1-6.

Thanks, redbirdjazz. I saw that article, but I thought it was old news -- prior to this season. I would like to see Memphis win the Little World Series, but they could use his help.

The priorities are all f'd up here, IMO.

It does seem kind of odd that he'd choose a training camp for a national team that doesn't really do that much anymore, now that baseball's out of the olympics, over the playoffs for the team he gets paid to play for.

DG reported today on Descalso's performance to date for the Olympic team.
Cardinals farmhand Daniel Descalso is with the team overseas. He’s started five games at second base, and he’s hitting .235/.381/.471 with three runs scored, two RBIs, four hits and a home run. The U.S. team will face the Netherlands today.

I would temper expectations for him. Outside of AA he hasn't shown anything.

Definitely a wait and see situation, but I have some optimism. Scouts say he is good defender. At age 22, he OPSed .925 in AA and .642 in AAA. The AAA figure might be a bit low because his BABIP was only .283 despite an 18% LD rate and 50% GB rate. His BB and K rates are pretty good for a fairly young hitter.
