40 Man Roster, Rule 5
We currently have 39 guys on our 40 man roster.
I'm assuming Ankiel, Stavinoha, Khalil, Hoffpauir, Pineiro, and Wellemeyer will be let go or removed from the roster. That brings the number down to 33.
I'm pretty sure that we have to make decisions about McCormick, Hearne, Maiques, Rowlett, Anderson, Jones, Ottavino, and Jay.
If that's everyone that would take our roster total to 41. I guess it's possible that Pagnozzi is removed for Anderson, but I'm wondering what some of the thoughts are on this board as to the 40 man construction. Also, let me know if I've missed anyone else who should be added.

I honestly don't think we'll be adding McCormick, Hearne, Rowlett to the 40 man. I wouldn't add Maiques either, as he isn't ready to be in a bullpen all year long. That leaves Jay, Jones and Ottavino.
Tough call, but I'd leave Ottavino off personally. We'll be fine with the 40 man IMHO.

Thanks Phin...I figured they'd look to add Hearne, Jay, Jones, and Ottavino. I know a lot will depend on what we do with the bench/LF/3B as well.

Re: 40 Man Roster, Rule 5
I thought Kenny Maiques was released after he tested positive for the banned substance?
This year we have to add high school players drafted in 2005 and college players drafted in 2006. So that would include Ottavino, Jay, Jones, Anderson, etc.
McCormick was Rule V eligible last year, as he was a collegiate player drafted in 2005.
And I still have hopes for Ottavino. I don't think it will be in the starting rotation, although he was starting to figure things out toward the end of last year. I think in the bullpen, as long as he can command his fastball and try to limit the walks, he can be a weapon.

Glaus needs to be added to the list of departures. Well, at least one of him, DeRosa and Holliday will be gone.
Isn't Ottavino as a reliever pretty much Chris Perez? Whatever the case, I think you've got to protect him.

Thanks Greenback...definitely missed that one.greenback44 wrote:Glaus needs to be added to the list of departures. Well, at least one of him, DeRosa and Holliday will be gone.
If what Swirls is saying is correct, Craig will also need to be added this year as well.

I wouldn't put Ottavino in the class of Perez, but similar ilk, yes. I've always had an anti-Ottavino bias ever since I saw his motion. I just don't believe he'll be able to throw strikes consistently with that motion.greenback44 wrote:Glaus needs to be added to the list of departures. Maquies was released, I believe that poster is correct.
It will all get sorted out, just because you don't add them to the 40 man doesn't mean you lose them, it merely means they are eligible for the Rule V draft. I doubt we'd have more than a player or two taken out of the guys eligible once you get past the obvious Jay, Anderson et al.

I cannot imagine the Cards not protecting Ottavino after his improved performance during the second half. Granted he stunk during the first half, but he did he enough later in the season at AAA to merit being added to our 40-man.greenback44 wrote:Glaus needs to be added to the list of departures. Ottavino wasn't that great even in the second half. His MLE after the break was something like a 5.50 FIP.

Re: 40 Man Roster, Rule 5
I don't expect great things from Ottavino, but it would seem that an org with a dearth of pitching prospects and room on its 40-man that even Ottavino would be worth protecting.cpebbles wrote:Ottavino wasn't that great even in the second half.
