Suppan Coming Back

Post by Jmodene »

And starting on Wednesday, the first day after roster expansion.

http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/news/a ... p&c_id=stl

The reason: Garcia gets pushed back to Friday, thus allowing us throw Jaime, Waino, and Carp at the Reds in what is obviously a must-sweep series. Jaime also gets two extra days' rest as a result, and we don't have to start Soup or Lohse against the Reds.

Works for me.

The Astros are second-to-last in runs and dead last in OPS. Berkman also has been replaced by Brett Wallace (478 OPS).

OTOH Feliz has been replaced by somebody not named Feliz.

Yes, I too am worried about the Astros series - but I can see why they'd want to juggle things around to be able to throw our three aces at the Reds next weekend.

Plus, we get to see if Soup has enough left in the tank for possible postseason action; I could see the Cards keeping him on the postseason roster instead of Lohse or MacDougal.

I wish I still believed in the possibility of the Cardinals having a postseason roster.

He could throw a no-hitter next time out. Would not mean there'd be an excuse for Suppan doing much other than cheering and spitting seeds in October.

It's not a must-sweep series unless things go really really bad the next week.

Anyone here a bit shocked that once uber-prospect Wallace has been passed around like a hot potato?

I'm surprised. I think the Cards drafted him with the small hope that he could be a 3B. If it didn't work out, and it didn't, I think the plan all along was to deal him. But at that point, every team surely knew what they were getting.

I really don't agree with starting Suppan on Wednesday. The Cards have an opportunity to skip their 5th starter, and they're not going to take advantage of it. The upgrade from Westbrook to Garcia against the Reds is not worth the downgrade from Garcia to Suppan against the Astros.
