Rave: Climbing a Mountain the Fun Way

Post by Hungary Jack »

Believe it or not, this ridge was actually a lot of fun. It's not as bad as it looks. Airy in a few spots, but mostly scrambling on decent rock up 2,000 ft to the summit of Torreys Peak. It's hard to get a single shot that captures the scale of this magnificent ridge.

(It's not my picture, but it's better than any I would have taken with my lousy phone camera)

That looks stupid or dangerous. One of the two.

Yeah, I don't like that helmet style either.

In all honesty, that is something that just seems wacko to me. There are a lot of people that love it; I understand we all have our things. But the constant threat of death if you slip makes it, for me at least, a lot more difficult to understand.

Edited to say that the video you posted the other day seemed like absolute insanity. How many people have died up there?

What "way" are you talking about? Did you climb up backwards or something?

I think he means he was on shrooms while he did it.

Ah, it's been so long for me that I hadn't thought psychedelics.

It's fun when there is a group of women in tights ascending directly ahead of you.

Nobody has died up there. A lot of people have died a lot lower.

Hansel: So I'm rappelling down Mount Vesuvius when suddenly I slip, and I start to fall. Just falling, ahh ahh, I'll never forget the terror. When suddenly I realize "Holy [expletive], Hansel, haven't you been smoking Peyote for six straight days, and couldn't some of this maybe be in your head?"
Derek Zoolander: And?
Hansel: And it was. I was totally fine. I've never even been to Mount Vesuvius.
