ST. LOUIS -- Memphis starter Brandon Dickson will make his next appearance after today with the major-league club, and he'll draw the start Thursday against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Manager Tony La Russa revealed his rotation for the next series early Sunday morning, and in an attempt to get a few of his regulars an extra day of rest the rookie righty will be promoted on Sept. 1 -- the first day rosters can expand -- to make that start in Miller Park.
The pitcher being skipped in Milwaukee is lefty Jaime Garcia. He'll return to the rotation when the club returns to Busch Stadium. Garcia is listed as available out of the bullpen this afternoon. La Russa called him "protection" if Lohse falters early.
The rotation, as La Russa explained:
vs. Milwaukee on Tuesday: Edwin Jackson
vs. Milwaukee on Wednesday: Jake Westbrook
vs. Milwaukee on Thursday: Brandon Dickson
Dickson is scheduled to start tonight for Class AAA Memphis. He is 8-9 with a 3.73 ERA. La Russa said it is a "good time" to get Carpenter an extra day of rest. Carpenter was scheduled to make the start Thursday, but instead the Cardinals will go with Dickson on short rest instead of the ace.
"It's September and it fits," the manager explained.

But I thought it was more important to keep giving the veterans playing time than to let the young kids play.

Obviously he finally realizes the season is lost.

God I hate Tony - you literally cannot trust a single word he says.

I don't mind Dickson starting, but against the Brewers? Come on Tony! I'm not going to pretend that we're still in contention, but if you sweep that series, and the BrewCrew goes on a long over due dry spell, then who knows?

I am totatly confused by this move...he has mentioned or hinted around that Garcia might need innings limited a little bit down the stretch...but I think this has more of a "wake up" call to Garcia more than anything. It is cotinually noted he can not over come mentally 1 or 2 plays, major struggles on the road, Duncan blasting the rotation for not going deep and Garcia has been horrible...I just think more than anything it is a message to Garcia.

Dickson isn't really a kid. And he doesn't have anything to do with the Cards future. He's a non prospect/factor. It's just a spot start to give tired arms rest, not really a start to see how Dickson performs.

But for Mr. and Mrs. Dickson, the drunken sex that led to Brandon's conception has taken on a special significance.
