Craig, Jay, Carpenter injury updates
"Allen Craig (hamstring) took batting practice and fielded grounders at second base before Thursday's game.
Interesting. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny has expressed a hesitancy to stick Craig at second base as former manager Tony La Russa did for a handful of games last season, but perhaps he's warmed to the idea. We can't imagine he'd spend a ton of time there, though, as he's a well below average defender there and would be more susceptible to injury. Plus, with Lance Berkman's (knee) season possibly over, Craig is needed at first base. The 27-year-old is slated to return when first eligible on June 1. "
"Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said he's hopeful that Jon Jay (shoulder) will be ready for activation from the disabled list when first eligible on May 30.
Jay has yet to perform any baseball-related activities, so it would seem to be a longshot that he'll be ready in five days. But, Matheny's optimism must mean the outfielder is feeling better. It's not clear if Jay will require a short rehab assignment before returning. "
"Chris Carpenter is showing greater flexibility with his right shoulder and could be ready to begin a throwing program sometime in the next four weeks.
Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said back on May 12 that Carp could start a throwing program in mid-June, which is now about three weeks away. Recent reports on the veteran righty have all been positive, but his comeback from nerve issues in his shoulder has been a slow process. He shouldn't be counted on before the All-Star break. "

I doubt Craig is going to be playing 2B anytime soon. It's just that if you want a guy fielding grounders (and, presumably, testing his mobility), more balls are hit up the middle during practice than on the corners.
After all, Bob Gibson used to take grounders at SS before games. That didn't mean he was going to play SS (although he probably could have).

A lineup that includes Adams (assuming he starts mashing), Craig, furcal, freeze, Holliday, Beltran, and yadi would be the greatest lineup in the history of baseball.

That pretty much reads like a snake.....adams 1b, craig 2b, furcal ss, freese 3b, holliday lf, beltran rf If I'm understanding gobirds correctly.Hungary Jack wrote:So Adams plays DH? Add to these reports ; club is optimistic after a successful trip to the surgeons table. 8-10 weeks

Re: Craig, Jay, Carpenter injury updates
Well, a meniscus tear that was repaired would have Berkman non weight-bearing on crutches for 6-8 weeks, and then rehab. So they obviously went in and snipped away at his poor meniscus. A minor tear and debridement could have a guy back in 4-6 weeks. I guess they are building in some time for rehab and then baseball conditioning.Cox@2nd wrote:Add to these reports ; club is optimistic after a successful trip to the surgeons table. 8-10 weeks
Regardless, it would be great to have him and Carp after the ASB.
That said, I hope we see some moves to address bullpen issues. And I am starting to think we need to somehow find a starter to take over for JW and his weak-assed sinker.

B.J. Rains @BJRains
They "found a partial tear in the medial meniscus, which was removed, and also a small femoral condylar cartilage tear, which was debrided."
