Braves, Nationals, Cardinals current leaders in Dempster hunt

By Jon Heyman | Baseball Insider

The Ryan Dempster Derby currently is a battle between the Braves, Nationals and Cardinals, people familiar with the talks suggest.

Th Cubs seek pitching prospects in all deals, especially some close to the big leagues. The Braves have among baseball's best supply of pitching prospects, but the Cardinals and Nationals should have enough for a deal, as well.

The Dodgers, seen as the the early favorite here and elsewhere, appear to be concentrating elsewhere. Matt Garza is another Cubs pitcher that's intereested the Dodgers, who are in greater need of offense, anyway.

The Dodgers are appearing out on Dempster, at least for the moment. Ken Rosenthal reported Saturday that the Dodgers were "very unlikely.''

The Tigers were seen as an earlier possibility for Dempster, who is 5-4 with a 2.11 ERA after having his 33-inning scoreless streak snapped Friday.

I think Dempster would be a good addition to the team for the right price, but if the Cards are trading with the cubs for a starter, I would much rather have Garza.

One NL club official's trade-deadline projection: "Dempster will be the first domino to fall. Then Liriano." #Cubs #Twins

Ryan Dempster’s first choice, the Los Angeles Dodgers, have cooled on trading for him, creating an opening for his second choice, the Atlanta Braves.

The Braves remain firmly in the mix for Dempster, though no deal was close as of late Sunday afternoon, major-league sources said.

Dempster, as a player with 10 years of service, the last five with the same team, has the right to veto any deal. He could ask for a contract extension from his new team in exchange for waiving his no-trade rights, which could complicate and prolong the process.

Two other teams interested in Dempster – the Washington Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals – share the same reservations as the Dodgers about parting with better prospects for a player who is a free agent at the end of the season.

Dempster’s preference is to remain in the National League. A poor outing by right-hander Jair Jurrjens against the Nationals on Sunday might only have reinforced the Braves’ desire to trade for a quality starter – and Dempster leads the NL with a 2.11 ERA.

I suppose I gotta eat some crow. Top-50 prospect (#46 this year) for a rental. 22 year old got promoted this year after posting some numbers eerily similar to Miller (but just 5 games).

Or we could just say that Atlanta is [expletive] stupid.
