I think that generally sums up everything Missouri between STL and KC.

Major rural urban divide in Missouri. Politics is wretched in nurturing and exploiting this division.

We had a family gathering at the wife's family farm in NW Mo. I like these folks, a lot. But the twisted undercurrent of politics was a downer. The family that came over from Chicago were subjected to snide anti-Obama comments by association.

And though I was just there to catch up with people I don't get to see nearly enough, and to enjoy the outdoors and drink beer...Not a political thought in my head... I sensed the Fox News devotee aunt was vetting me for liberal ness.

All quite sad. The Missouri state fair thing is not the least bit surprising.

I'm not at all surprised either. This happened at the Iowa State Fair last year:

Not quite the same situation, but similar.

Oops - posted the state fair thing in the Obama thread in social.

My wife is from Ava in SW Missouri and most of her family is like what Freed describes. Her dad is surprisingly open-minded and likes to tell us how he stirs the pot with folks. I've had to unfriend a few people on facebook because of the racist stuff they post.

Drove all over the Midwest this summer-IL,IA, MI, WI and the last was across MO via highway 70. From a wayfarer perspective -I would rank MO least appealing of these. The billboards and the incessant parade of false hopes (political causes, religion, college, fireworks, and adult superstores)... It is a hell scape for the bourgeois traveler.

Well I posted it first in the WTF thread so now we're up to three.

I read some of the comments on that stltoday story just to remind myself how awful some people are, and was a little surprised that one of the worst comments was from someone I am related to.

Dear (Insert name of Freed's relative(s) here):

We will once again be gathering for a family get together. Since not all family members share the same political opinions, this year there will be absolutely no discussions of any kind relating to politics. We will eat, drink and be merry sharing in each other's company.

If you cannot abide by this simple request please refrain from attending.

Thank you,
Uncle Joe (or whoever hosts)

This would not work, since we were at their place. A bit of irony, The elder patriarch 94 y/o on the farm is staunch democrat (probably due to New Deal and Truman). so incredibly, there is political friction between this grandpa and the Obama hating family up the road.

The last election had email feuding - because the inevitable estate issues when grandpa passes and the ignorance about estate taxes. My mother in law and her sister in Texas were told by the rural right wing faction that they must vote Romney because of taxes, as if their votes in MO And TX were going to make a difference.

It is pathetic.
