That role could be Gast's as well, speculates one NL executive, who said: "They will have room when they trade Wacha to Cleveland for Asdrubal Cabrera."
I didn't want to make a new thread for this, but I thought that it was interesting. I wouldn't want to trade Wacha, but Cabrera would be a nice trade acquisition.

Not knowing about Cabrera's contract, I'd guess that's about right. Wacha is too good in my mind to give up for Cabrera which fits and Wacha probably isn't enough in Cleveland's mind.

Holy [expletive], yes!!!! Unmitigated disaster fat strat said the bullpen would be...or whatever

(from the same article above)
Gast should arrive sometime soon for the Cardinals if their bullpen remains the unmitigated disaster it's been

Dayyum. I was really hoping Craig n Freese n the like would hit, and negate the needs to go outside and replace Kozma. Wacha has been DOM. I was/am sooo excited for him to take Westbrook's spot.

Are we entirely sure this isn't a Walt quote? He might be trying to undermine The Moz...

Wacha for Cabrera would be one of the more stupid trades of the past half-century.

Goold's take from a month ago.

The Cardinals are not trading Michael Wacha for two reasons. One, they cannot because he was just drafted and teams are not allowed to trade a player until a year after the player was signed. Two, he's really really good. Rare good. Starting pitcher good. He's going to be the new Allen Craig: The Cardinals won't even trade his baseball card.
One of those goes away in June, I guess...but still.

Side question: STL_Cards, are you a Def Leppard fan, by any chance?

The Cardinals. Wacha is 21 and got to AAA in one year. Pitching prospects are bad and all that, but you don't give up his potential for mediocrity. Cabrera is mediocre.

Lol. The bullpen was an unmitigated disaster, but I'm not convinced Gast is going to mitigate it. Would rather see Wacha or Martinez up. But, I understand why the club is hesitant to promote those guys.

I still think the best cure for our pen is patience.

And I don't know about Wacha for Cabrera. I think it's probably about what the Indians would want, but I'm hesitant to give up Wacha for a SS who might end up at 2b. Plus, I still don't know what to think about Wacha. Fans and people around the team are talking about him as an ace level SP. Scouts and draftniks pegged him as a mid-rotation kind of guy.

If you ask me if I would give up a pitcher that projects to be like Garcia or Lynn for Cabrera, I would be interested in it. If you ask me if I would give up a pitcher that projects like a Miller or Rosenthal for Cabrera, I wouldn't do it.

Mostly, I just don't want Cabrera for a pitcher. I want him for a bat... like Adams. Maybe Wong. I don't know that we'll be able to find a more productive player than Cabrera, but I would really prefer a better defensive player for SS. I really believe this team needs a great defensive SS, even if it has to sacrifice some offense to do that. We're getting offense at 2b and will probably continue to get offense there. SS can be defense first but it would be nice to get a little more than we are getting from Kozma.
