US Open AND the World Cup? I just don't know what to do with myself.

It was no US Open but my friends and I finally pulled out the win in our annual company golf tournament Saturday after finishing second last year. We've been working on that for awhile... and honestly it had nothing to do with me. We have the bomber who hits it a mile but not always in the fairway, the guy who is insanely consistent and rarely hits a bad shot, the girl who hits a beautiful high draw (and has a 130+ yard advantage from the tee on 3 of the last 4 on the front nine and a couple more on the back)... and then there is me.

I'm the team wild card. You just never know what is going to happen. I guess next year I should work on being the team putter because that is all we are missing. We finished six under (7 under won it last year with us in second and 5 under) but could have been a lot better if we could hit a freaking put. I had a great time but it is a bit frustrating to hit a really good shot and then have one of the other three put it out there a bit farther or just a bit closer to the pin as happened a dozen or so times during the day. Now that I have a trophy from the tournament, I think I'll put together a new team next year that won't be as compettitive but at least I won't be holding the other three back. They can pick up someone better and just dominate for years to come as long as they all still work here considering they are all 27 or 28 and I'm the old man of the group at 36.

A good scramble foursome needs a wild card, you never know when that guy/girl is going to hit the rescue chip to 2 inches away because he/she duffed it but it rolled just right. Don't be frustrated when your shot isn't used. We usually have our wild card hit first, and if its playable from there, we can all attack. Your "good" shot allows for the other players to go at the pin or cut the corner on a drive.

I'm the long-ball guy for our scrambles, and I love it when I can bomb away without consequence because someone else poked one down the middle.

Besides, someone has to buy the beers.

I actually do hit first 99% of the time and I know it helps let the other guys bomb away with no pressure but it does knock your ego down a peg or two when the girl is just bombing the ball. I had a lot more fun than my last two times out this year. A big part is that I got a new driver and it was my first time using it. I can finally hit a ball that is in play off of the tee. When I said I was the wild card, I literally meant that you had no idea where my ball was going off the tee for awhile. I finally thought to ask if anyone else had some longer tees because I couldn't hit the ball off of the sweet spot and was getting on top of it too much and once I got longer tees, my driver actually started working again. I can't wait to get out and play another round.

My previous driver was about ten years old and I never realized it but the face is 2.5 degrees closed. I tried the driver out at a demo days and my slice was more manageable and the ball went almost perfectly straight with it so I bought it. Over the years the slight fade has shifted to straight, slight draw and now SNAP HOOK. I seriously could not control it anymore. So I found an Taylormade R11s for $180 on clearance and after two tweaks and longer tees, I'm back to hitting a really nice straight ball with maybe a slight draw consistently. I uppded the loft from 9 to 10.5 and opened the face 1.5 degrees. I would probably have a lot more distance if I had the 10.5 degree because I'm getting a bit lower of a trajectory than I want but too late now. I bought the 9 degree and can't make it any higher. My old driver was a 9 degree because my 10.5 of the same driver is just way too high so I thought I needed the lower loft and didn't read reviews until after that say to go with the higher loft because the club has a lower trajectory than normal. At least if I can tee it up higher, it works out well for me. I don't think the loft will be much of a problem going forward though. It was getting better each time I swung the club and with only hitting three or four on the range because the tees were so short, I still didn't hit the club much.

Man I can't wait to play again!

BTW - congrats to Michelle Wie. A ton of pressure was put on her at such a young age. She's still only 24, and now has a major.
