Rant: I hate losing and I hate sports

I want to preface this rant to let everyone know I am a huge sports fan. I love all sports and care way too much about them. I am like the Marlins guy at the World Series without the attention and without the money. I invest so much time into my favorite teams, and this includes fantasy sports as well.

So the family and I went to Disney World in mid October. It coincided with the first 2 games of the NLCS. Those facts aren't really releveant to this rant but the following things have happened since I got back:

1. The Cards lost 3 heart breaking games in a row to the Giants and were eliminated from the playoffs on a walk off homer (don't need to remind anyone here of that fact).

2. Oscar Taveras died (ditto).

3. The Jets are 1-5 and 2-9 overall. They are also the laughingstock of the league. The kicker is that they were blown out by the Bills twice.....my wife's favorite team.

4. The 76ers are 0-14, also the laughingstock of the NBA.

5. The Sabres are once again on track to finish with the worst record in the NHL.

6. Syracuse football is 1-4 and 3-8 overall. They have played 4 different quarterbacks and won't be going to a bowl game.

7. Syracuse basketball is 3-1, but is already ranked outside the top 25. Several analysts are predicting they miss the NCAA tournament.

8. All 3 of my fantasy football teams will miss the playoffs. And 1 of those I put way too much energy into. It's sad and pathetic how much I care about that 1 fantasy league, but I do.

So that's my life right now. Compared to the events in Ferguson, obviously, none of this is important. But sports are such a huge part of my life. And when every team I root for loses in epic fashion over a 6 week stretch, it gets frustrating. I needed to vent.

Felt good to write this all out though.

SU lost 3/5 of their starting five to the NBA - everyone knew they would regress somewhat. I have faith in Jimmy B that the team will remain solid enough for an NCAA berth, but keep in mind - that's literally four full months away. A lot can happen between now and then.

Now SU football, yeah they suck. To say they've been decimated by injuries this year would be an understatement.

SU was my local team for the past five years - you can't live in upstate NY and not root for them.

im a cardinals fan first and foremost and they are usually good (as we know), and all i really "hope" for is at least making the playoffs. and they usually do.

i root for mizzou athletics because of family ties but i dont care that much. shocker basketball has been awesome these last few years and while they are my alma mater even i can't assume this run will be a "dynasty" or what have you so im just enjoying it as much as i can right now.

so yeah, i guess i dont get bummed by sports too much.

i guess this is more of a rhetorical question, but how on earth does one become a fan of such a weird assortment of teams?

Looks like the Cards and Sixers are the only outliers. But those are big outliers.

Correct, I live in NY (just north of NYC).

Cards: My favorite part of baseball growing up was stealing bases. I loved checking the box scores in the paper each morning to see which players stole bases. I gravitated towards the Cards box scores first since this was the mid 80s. I was 5 years old in 1985. Game 7 of the world series is as far back as I can go for a baseball memory. My family is huge Mets fans. I have no tie to STL at all. There is no question I get asked more often than "Why are you a Cardinals fan"?

Jets: Live in NY, family is Jets fans.

Sixers: When I was a kid, my favorite player was Dr. J. Stuck with them ever since.

Sabres: I didn't really like hockey as a kid. But I started getting into it when I met my wife, who as stated in the original post, is from Buffalo.

Syracuse: I am an alum!

I am a Jets season ticket holder but I would still rather have another Cards World Series championship over a (first in my lifetime) Jets Super Bowl. That's how much I love the Cards. People always seemed shocked when I tell that to them, but it's the truth.

marx and geography aside, I think a lot of people have weird assortments of teams they love because of being front-runner fans young. I know a guy lives in Columbus, no home affiliation to anything, who is a Braves/Cowboys/Bulls fan. You can do the math real fast in your head and figure out roughly what year he was in grade school and becoming a sports fan. My dad grew up in Central IL and is a Packers/Cardinals/Celtics/Bruins fan. He was a total front-runner guy young and stuck with those allegiances.
