Our legal system is crumbling today

The two 12 year old girls who stabbed another because they thought it would please a fictional character have been deemed competent to stand trial and are being tried as adults, when they are clearly neither competent nor adult.

I do get that being competent to stand trial is different than being sane or that they understood what they were doing at the time. But this just seems so f'ed up to me. They're supposed to be able to assist in their own defense. I don't see how that's possible.
